Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
March. 15,1997 NROriginally a collection of clips from the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, Death was created as a precursor to the re-worked ending of the series. Rebirth was intended as that re-worked ending, but after production overruns Rebirth became only the first half of the first part of The End of Evangelion, with some minor differences.

Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
Memorable, crazy movie
Absolutely brilliant
One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
Having seen episodes 5 and 6 from my local library (And also some scattered episodes from when I was small), I decided to pick this one up as well, thinking it was the End of Evangelion (It was wrongly labeled by the library, despite how obvious it wasn't from the big words DEATH AND REBIRTH on the cover). What I got, however, was a rushed and complicated mess of scattered scene after scattered scene. Having not seen much of the series, I was left asking myself "What the heck just happened?". I had no idea who most of the characters were and I couldn't pick up even the slightest idea of the plot. And that's just the start. Then, you have 20 minutes of EoE. The first scene is more messed up than a raving maniac and from there follows extreme sadistic violence. Don't be fooled, Australians, by its M-rating (as well as EoE)-it's more explicit than it sounds. To finish, don't watch this unless you've seen all the episodes of Evangelion up to Episode 24. If you don't, you'll be left more confused than I was.
The Neon Genesis Evangelion series is one of my favorite animes. One only has to look at my End of Evangelion review to see the degree to which I hold the series. However, Death and Rebirth should come with a disclaimer. There are some who would forgo watching the series and instead watch this and the End of Evangelion. I would strongly recommend against watching this film until after you have seen the full tv series. Death and Rebirth suffers from having to stuff a great deal of story (26 episodes X 22 mins = 9.5 hours) into only two hours. It achieves this by cutting out alot and changing the order of the remaining story. Die hard fans of the series will get it, but I doubt a newcomer would. In all honesty, the new scenes are short, few, and far between. To sum up, watch this after watching the full series and the End of Evangelion. It will be most enjoyed by die hard fans wishing to complete the Evangelion experience.
Hmmm..I saw episode one on a mates old VHS copy of NGE and toyed with the idea of buying the box set on DVD. Before I shelled out all that bread I thought I should probably check out death and rebirth. What has been billed by some as a 'synopsis' of the series (except the last two eps). What I actually got was a confusing hour or so that was edited at such fast pace I went cross eyed. When a new character or plot point came up a little caption was introduced to tell you who it was. This remained on the screen for about 12 frames. I had to keep freezing it to find out. This pretty much sums up death and rebirth.I must admit, trying to fit 15 odd hours worth of plot onto a single disc is a pretty big ask but im positive they could have done it better than this. The speacial feature was pretty good, though. It was similar to the follow the white rabbit on the matrix dvd. Everytime something new came up you were prompted to press enter and you were given a brief overview of what was happening.
This movie is a summary of the previous 26 episodes. I think the NGE episodes worth watching, but if u skipped them, u should watch this movie to have a clue about the second movie. One last word about NGE: It is one of the best anime series I've ever watched, try to watch all the episodes and the movies.
