I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Very disappointed :(
It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
This French made but English language sci-fi feature is certainly one of the most unusual films I've seen in recent months and that is really saying something. For a start the story regards a futuristic world full of folks genetically modified while above them sits a floating pyramid full of Egyptian gods......for some reason!? It tells the story of a girl wanting to be human, not knowing exactly what she is but being targeted from all sides each person with their own agenda including a frisky Egyptian god.The movie in many respects looks and reminded me of the television series Farscape (1999) but one thing sets it apart and it's one of the most damaging parts of the film.Live action is merged with animation and by that I don't merely mean the sfx I mean half the characters are animated and animated poorly. The animation is that cheap horrible style you often see in kids cartoons and side by side with live action actors looked ridiculous! The premise of Immortal is solid and the cast were better than I expected but Roger Rabbit did a better job of merging live action and cartoon and that was back in the 1980's! Plus that actually explained why it was full of cartoons, this just looked terrible. If you can get past this (Which I couldn't) you can do worse, but for me personally it made the film look shoddy. The Good: The concept The cast The Bad: Poor animation Holes in plotThings I learnt from this movie: Someone actually thought merging live action and poor cgi animation was a good idea Egyptian Gods are allergic to clothes In the future all women will glue their hair to their heads
What a fantastic film. One that I will be watching again someday as I think I'll get even more from it with a second viewing. I love the depth of this world, the story and its characters. The greatly detailed backgrounds are flawless and every part of the film; even the switches to animation or foreign languages; do not wrench you from this immersive experience.Do feel free to watch this film while utterly relaxed (have a few beers) and let it wash over you. It is an incredibly detailed piece of art that can either be dissected for its message or just enjoyed for its visual beauty.Suspend your disbelief and invest some of your time on this fantasy train.
So much hate for this work of art! Yikes! The saga of Nikopol and the Immortals ran for a long time in Heavy Metal magazine. I think it came over from the original Metal Hurlant from France. This was a different time. The music was different. The people were different. Our sense of art was different. Many artists and musicians loved to read Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant back then. It was a sort of comic book for intellectuals. Remember most of us had come out of the world of the 60s and into the 70s. Our sense of things was much different than today. Back then art --especially graphic art--was vital to us. Now, perhaps, its the internet. Then it was still the days of print. We read books copiously. We lived for books. We read graphic art much the same. It was important to us. So, if you like, this Nikopol thing is.. nostalgia? Nostalgia for a time when poetry still existed? A time before the human spirit was crushed and degraded into the withered corrupted thing it is today? Or not. Have it your own way.
Read some decent things about this movie and thought I would give it a go. I am probably no more the wise for watching it as to be quite honest I was kind of left asking myself "what the hell was all that about?". Anyway, it doesn't matter. Just watch it for the decent enough attempt at making a sci fi movie which does not follow any of the old plots laid out by so many. That is one good thing about this film, it is definitely original. So original I didn't have a clue what was going on most of the time. The acting is OK, nothing special. The CGI is a bit hit and miss, sometimes it can look amazing and flawless, then you get some character who's face looks like it was made on an old ZX81. Would I watch it again? Nah, not worth it, once you have seen it that's enough really.
