The Worst Film Ever
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Sure, this film has the broadest humour you'll ever witness in a Jackie Chan film (and that includes Half a Loaf of Kung Fu), but City Hunter is a good time from start to finish. There's a ton of action, loads of babes, some weirdness, and even a musical number! It's not trying to be anything more than entertaining. I read in Jackie's biography that even he's not too fond of this film, but it's a true guilty pleasure for me.In a plot stolen from an episode of Inspector Gadget (and that goes for you too, Under Siege), a load of terrorists are planning on hijacking a cruise ship and robbing everybody on board. Unluckily for them, City Hunter (Chan) is on board, looking for the daughter of a wealthy businessman, as well as Chan's sidekick (who's in love with him), her cousin, who's in love with her, a female cop and her sidekick and a card dealer playing with a deadly deck. On the bad guy's side is martial arts guy Richard Norton, b-movie martial arts dude Gary Daniels, and even Mike Abbot of 'Godfrey Ho Ninja films' fame! Also, several thousand bad guys with machine guns. Being a Jackie film, you know how this plays out, so let's get to the set pieces instead. You've got Jackie taking on two huge black guys while Bruce Lee does the same on a cinema screen, a bonkers skateboard chase, and a truly insane sequence where Chan and Daniels take on each other as characters from Street Fighter 2. Chan's showdown with Norton is pretty nifty too. Weirdness wise, you've got Jackie imagining a woman's leg is a chicken drumstick, some animation, the above Street Fighter fight and the musical number (which was missing from the video version of this film). Your enjoyment of this film may be down to your tolerance from slapstick, as there's tons of it here (some complete with sound effects). It's a beautiful looking film too – loads of primary colours used to good effect. We've got two small kids and apart from Gorgeous, this is the only Jackie Chan film we can show them at their age (although it is a bit violent, but you haven't met my kids).
Based on a comic by Tsukasa Houjo, City Hunter was made because a Japanese fan mentioned to Jackie Chan that he looks like Ryo Saeba.Ryo Saeba (Jackie Chan) is asked to bring back Seiko (Kumoko Goto) back to Japan. On their way back, the luxury liner carrying both gets high jacked by gangs. Ryo, Seiko and others battle the gang inside the luxury liner. The movie is made to appeal to both Hong Kong and Japanese audience, and actor Joey Wong who was popular at the time in Japan appears as Ryo Saeba's girlfriend. Kumiko Goto who was popular in Japan at the time also appears. All star cast of Richard Norton, Leon Lai, and Chingmy Yau also appears to appeal to audiences in both countries. There's a comical scene where characters that looks like the Street Fighter appearing in fight scenes. This movie is bit different from other Jackie Chan movies, in that body exploitation with many men and women in their swim suit appearing, and overt comedy is part of the story. But the fight scene between Richard Norton and Jackie Chan is pure Jackie Chan movie. Many people say this is the only Jackie Chan movie that doesn't work, but it is an entertaining movie with some good action spread in between.
I saw this on late night TV with a couple of friends, and all three of us were screaming with laughter all the way through it, much to the dismay of the lady of the house. I'm not usually a huge fan of Jackie Chan, but this film was just so funny that it instantly became one of my favourite films ever, and probably my favourite comedy. The stunts were funny and impressed me, the cheesiness was brilliant, and there were a couple of totally classic scenes (particularly the Street Fighter scene). It's hard to explain what makes a film funny, there's something about a girl attacking a huge, built, martial arts guy with a ponytail, and getting punched in the stomach which has you moaning and laughing at the same time, like some Trey Parker/Matt Stone humour, though without ever really resorting to cheap laughs through it (except with the cheesiness, which really adds to it). Loved it, just loved it, a must see.
I bought a 3 DVD box named "Manga in motion" which contained the movies "Story Of Ricky", "Dragon From Russia" and "City Hunter". I watched the two other movies and thought that they were OK, so I didn't expect very much from this movie, I thought it may as well be "OK". The movie starts with a very stupid scene and goes worse and much, much more worse all the time. The humor is very stupid (even for a hong kong movie), and so is the over-acting. I just had to fight to watch the first 30 minutes of the movie. Then, in the end comes the Street fighter scene. I can honestly say that I have never seen anything as stupid and retarded as that scene. That scene almost made me stop watching the movie, but I fought until the end. The movie is without a doubt Jackie Chan's worst movie, and don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Chan. But this kind of a movie is something that I think they shouldn't have done. 2/10 *** WORST JACKIE CHAN MOVIE EVER ***
