The Worst Film Ever
Such a frustrating disappointment
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
The Oranges is about two suburban families who are the best of friends until the father of one family has an affair with the daughter of the other. Chaos follows...First of all, The Oranges has a fantastic cast, all of which play their parts well. However, it is a character piece and to really enjoy these characters, we need to learn a little more about them. It's only an hour and a half and it all seems a little rushed. The two 'lovers' get together pretty quickly and there's little explanation as to why they should fall so head over heels in love with each other that they don't care about destroying both their families. Some people have described it as a 'comedy.' I would say it's definitely more of a drama. I only laughed the once (scene involving an ice bucket), but that doesn't mean that it's a bad film. It's nice to see a film with slightly more controversial subject matter. I'm not sure who the target audience is. Its 'lack of moral compass' may offend some more traditional viewers, but hopefully it will still be received positively.Apart from the whole 'rushed feel' of trying to get everything wrapped up neatly in an hour and a half, I felt the ending was a little predictable. You'll probably be able to guess what happens to every major character. But, don't let that stop you enjoying this. It's an odd movie which doesn't really fit anywhere, but with a bit of luck it will find an audience and end up something of a cult hit.http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/
The friendship between two middle-aged neighboring couples is severely strained during the Christmas holidays when the patriarch of one family has an affair with the post-teenage daughter of his friends. Poorly-written suburban shenanigans from Ian Helfer and Jay Reiss, whose script tries for a wry tone but does not have enough substance to carry interest passed the halfway mark. Their scenario, mostly made up from memories of other films such as "American Beauty" and "Say Anything", is unconvincing in the extreme, hobbled further by poorly-cast kid actors who look nothing like their on-screen parents. Obnoxious and foul-mouthed throughout...and yet scored with nostalgic seasonal music and over-decorated with twinkling lights and snowmen. * from ****
What you have to be clear about, is that this movie is about perception. How do people perceive things, how does society judge and how do we know what is wrong and right? While I admit that especially later on, this movie lacks a bit of attachment to some of the characters, in never feels like they are cardboard cut outs. And while it might seem that passion is missing, just acting wild is not the definition of going through things. Sometimes a more subtle approach can work better. If you feel, the movie should have been more aggressive in that case, that is a fair point, but you either accept that it didn't take that route or you are condemning it to lose from the start. The actors are incredible, but reading their names alone should tell you that. Their interactions and connections seem to work perfectly. Even the ending is nicely done, although as always it won't satisfy everybody of course. A family drama/comedy that is by definition not a family film, but a look into guilt, responsibilities, growing up and (as mentioned above) perception
This film took me by surprise. I didn't have much hope for it when I learned it played on an overused cliché, a relationship between a married gentleman and a much younger girl. As you will find, things get much worse. Relationships are broken and everyone is ultimately affected. This film promotes the fact that seeking happiness for yourself can sometimes have an adverse effect on the people you care about most. I found myself rooting Hugh Laurie.I wanted to believe he could love a much younger woman and that she could love back.Yes the story was fairly predictable but if you take this movie for what it is you will be entertained throughout. All in all the film portrayed just what it wanted. The ending wasn't overly profound. It's tells us what we already know, that things go on.
