Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Yeah sure the story and writting is not that great but it's clean fun and the killer is like Jason but ripping victems eyes out after killing them. I haven't watch the second one but I know it's mix like people saying it's better than the first one or it's terrible but I belive this one is better. Yeah I know WWE films are not great like Leprechaun Origins (2014) or any other ones. I like this movie, it's more enjoyable than A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Black X-Mas remake, Halloween remake, and Halloween Resurrection including part 6. I kinda don't get the hate for the film like I enjoy it and others do, I like Kane in this one like he's like Jason but he could kinda talk (I wish Kane play as Jason if WWE let him play in the Friday The 13th movie). Not the best but it's enjoyable.
See No Evil (2006): Dir: Gregory Dark / Cast: Glenn Jacobs, Samantha Noble, Michael J. Pagan, Christina Vidal, Luke Pegler: Disgusting horror film about a killer who plucks the eyes out of his victims. It is also another failed attempt to bring a wrestler into feature films. If you thought that Hulk Hogan starred in stupid films then you're in for a real treat when Kane hunts down and murders petty criminals in a huge rundown hotel. Why the hotel is still standing is a question left unanswered but in reality it would be classified as a hazard, much like this film. And why are production values about as enticing as a cardboard box? Perhaps every dime went into training Kane how to act like...HIS WRESTLING PERSONA! Who would have thought, huh? Kane, whose real name is Glen Jacobs, is a menacing wrestling personality but that is about as far as it should go. Director Gregory Dark films everything as if he is half asleep. Kane beats the hell out of Samantha Noble, Michael J. Pagan, Christina Vidal, etc. They are not nearly as energetic as his wrestling opponents but one can say that wrestling puts on a more realistic show than the travesty given here. Why not just pay for a ninety minute battle royal where Kane just heaves the people responsible for this film over the top rope? There is no point to this wasted piece of junk other than to bring Kane to the screen and hopefully be seen by no one. Score: 1 / 10
Eight petty criminals are assigned to do community service by cleaning up a filthy and dilapidated abandoned hotel. Unfortunately, said hotel proves to be the stalking grounds of vicious reclusive psychopath Jacob Goodnight (enormous professional wrestler Kane).Okay, the premise alone is pretty damn silly and preposterous, what with a small handful of folks selected to clean up in a mere three days (!) a massive dingy hotel with multiple floors which somehow still has electricity and running water despite having been ravaged in the past by a fire. Then there's the way director Gregory Dark, a fellow whose previous credits include hardcore porn, 90's soft-core erotic thrillers, and music videos for people like Britney Spears, Vitamin C, and Mandy Moore, goes gloriously whole hog on the flashy pyrotechnics replete with rapid-fire editing, shadowy lighting, black and white freeze frames complete with text explaining the specific offenses of each criminal, sepia-tinged flashbacks, and hyperactive camera-work. Dan Madigan's leave-no-cliché unturned script likewise hits the hilariously cornball spot with jaw-dropping bluntness: Jacob naturally turns out to be the dangerously toxic product of childhood abuse and a strict religious upbringing while the obnoxious victims clearly mark themselves for doom by smoking weed and making out.The acceptable acting by the competent cast holds the picture together: Rachael Taylor as snooty rich bitch Zoe, Christina Vidal as the sassy Christine, Michael J. Pagan as the smooth Tye, Luke Pegler as swaggering thug Michael, Samantha Noble as the hapless Kira, Craig Horner as the nerdy Craig, Penny McNamee as sensitive vegan Melissa, and Steve Vidler as rugged ex-cop Williams. With his bald head, evil leer, and hulking physique, Kane makes for a genuinely fearsome and intimidating horror fiend. The moments of gory and sadistic brutality pack a savage punch, with plenty of ugly eyeball violence and a memorably nasty cellphone-shoved-down-the-throat gag. Ben Nott's grayish cinematography provides an appropriately gloomy'n'grungy look. Fun slasher schlock.
Firstly, I would like to mention that See No Evil is not an excellent horror film, but I will say it is not the worst of the bunch of horror films that have come out before and after it. In the year 2006, I believe it was a real step up for horror films and it was one of the best years for it as 2005 brought as CGI-ed uncreativity. The year 2006 however to me brang something more to the genre. Sure, we still had many films about cannibalism, torture, murder, blood, gore and disasters but I believe that it went back to brutal roots. And films like See No Evil, Slither, Black Sheep and the Hills Have Eyes remake were some of the films to do that. A year later, 2007 continued to strive in the same vain.Viewing See No Evil, I cannot thank it enough for actually getting me into the horror genre. I was never a major horror film fanatic until I watched See No Evil. Once I saw this film from 2006 (which I thought was an excellent year for horror films), I instantly engaged with the genre, now having watched many horror films, especially in the slasher category being Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th naming a few of the famous slashers.I do See No Evi is quite cliché' and at times re-cycles many of the same formulas we have seen in countless slasher films over the past decades. But overall, I find it to be creepy (don't read on if you don't like spoilers), parts including the girl getting a phone shoved down her throat or when Richie and Ty find a ruffled victim who they realize wasn't killed long ago. I thought even though this film was like those of Friday the 13th or Scream, I still thought there were elements of disturbance and creepiness.Being honest, I thought that the film was paced quite well. We have an introduction to a gruesome massacre and discovery, then we are introduced to the juvenile teens one by one, and then it sets in an isolated, abandoned hotel at night time, where a psychopathic recluse does away with all of them unexpectedly. Same formula of story but I found this film unique for many reasons.Warning, that I don't like WWE or many of their films. This, Walking Tall and The Condemned are the only exceptions. Stuff like the Marine was awful.Back to the review, I thought that Kane or Glen Jacobs did an excellent job at playing the killer, Jacob Goodnight. He really evoked some fear and aggression through his character. I believe he should be chosen to be in many more horror/slasher stalk horror films. He was pretty creepy in this, especially many of the close-up's or his perspective shots. The other actors were alright but Kane stole the show.I thought that setting the plot at a rundown hotel was an awesome idea, something different for once. The music was tense and many of the killers although maybe a bit silly, were pretty decent.Overall, See No Evil is no gold-winning Horror film, but there shouldn't be so much hate on it. It really isn't that bad. Many of the horror films from 2005 were awful. Accept for Feast, but many from that period were horrible. This film kicks ass and I do believe it doesn't intend or even try to cover new ground at all. It was only following the formula. Even Horror films these days have tried following the same ol' slasher formula. See No Evil was unique, and I'd like to see Kane in more horror films. 7 eyeballs out of 10
