By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
As I said the film would have been better as a thriller or suspense horror because of what Kurt Russel does. Ok, so Kirt Russels character is a handyman with a couple of kids and there is no mother. Goldie Hawn's charecter is a posh stuck-up rich brat basiccly she falls of a boat and gets amnesia. Then being the morally right perfect citizen that he is Kurt Russel goes to the hospital and claims that Goldie Hawn is his wife so she goes home with Kurt Russel. Who tells her that they have been married for quite some time and that his kids are also her kids. Then he practically makes her into his slave she is forced to wash the dishes, clean and dust the house and look after his kids. This all happening as his sick and twisted form of revenge. Then she found out the truth; about her past life and what does she do? Stays with him, SHE STAYS WITH HIM! In conclusion this film was basically a twisted dark look into what vengeance can do to a person. Would have probably been good if it was, as I've said a thriller or suspense horror. This film will probably only be enjoyable as a quick pass time as long as you don't look into it that much. If not you could probably only enjoy it if you are extremely drunk, high in drugs or have mush for brains. DONT WATCH THIS (for your own good)!
(Originally reviewed: 14/02/2017) Real life duo Russell and Hawn have solid on screen chemistry in this good, at times rather funny light comedy. Garry Marshall's direction is spot on; he knows how to make use of locations and there are some great shots towards the start of the picture that really stand out. A few funny moments include Russell and Hawn trading insults which could possibly be seen as flirting but within that scene he's staring at her backside while eating some posh crackers and a joke involving Hawn's amnesia and her husband deciding to leave her which results in dialogue such as he wanted a clean break; though some will hardly find Overboard's general story acceptable; I for one found it original and refreshing. The supporting cast are all watchable and there's plenty of funny moments and heart-warming scenes with real sincerity among the characters to warrant a recommendation; overboard may have its share of jokes that miss the mark and some of the dialogue isn't too impressive but it's a good comedy with strong chemistry and a story that works out well in the end.
Garry Marshall's "Overboard" is one of the funniest movies of the 1980's that I have seen since "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" in the very same year. The movie stars Goldie Hawn as Joanna Proffitt a mother who becomes spoiled and loses her memory and has to deal with a lot of motherly problems with all of her sons and her husband Dean (Kurt Russell) who acts like a child and doesn't want to be too strict with his sons. Not only is it funny it is also a very effective love story with very good performances from both Hawn and Russell. another thing the movie does is not focus on Hawn as a spoiled woman but the movie focuses on two important things throughout the course of the movie, the fist thing being that a family may sometimes feel like they hate each-other when they don't on the inside, and the second thing being that a marriage only works when you choose the right person to marry. This movie is also ranked (to me personally) as one of the best comedies of all time along with "Some Like it Hot" (1959), "Ball of Fire" (1941), "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986), "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (1987), and "Ed Wood" (1994). this is a movie that I happen to think that a lot of kids of all ages will happen to enjoy, and this was a fun movie to watch and is worth watching over and over again.
As I write this review, I have just watched this delightful comedy for what is about the 15th time, and it still is one of my all-time favorites. Yes it is formulaic, predictable, and often overdone. Yes it's true that if this were to happen in real life it would be criminal, and punishable to the extreme. Yet it manages to be both funny and heart-warming, with some eternal truths thrown in about values and what is important in life. Also it has some original ideas, such as building a miniature golf course and not going overboard (No pun intended) on school achievement and test scores. Despite the fact that this was not made to be an Oscar contender, it nevertheless is as close to a perfect comedy as I own in my huge DVD collection, and is a favorite of mine and most of my friends. If you can't enjoy this, I honestly feel sorry for you; you need to lighten up.
