Sorry, this movie sucks
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
RIGOR MORTIS is a Hong Kong horror movie from youthful director Juno Mak that has been devised as a tribute to Hong Kong horror of old, in particular the MR. VAMPIRE franchise. Many old-time stars of this film series have been cast in supporting roles, so there's a nostalgic, warm glow for Hong Kong cinema buffs that sits at odds with the rather grisly and mean-spirited plotting. The setting is a derelict apartment building of the kind favoured in Japanese ghost cinema such as DARK WATER (it comes as no surprise that Takashi Shimizu, director of JU-ON: THE GRUDGE, is a producer here). Anthony Chan is the newcomer who moves in only to discover that the building is plagued by both a sinister and aggressive vampire as well as twin ghosts. The latter are borrowed straight from THE GRUDGE with the addition of lots of pretty CGI effects. What follows is an occasionally confusing story with random scenes interspersed out of linear order and occasionally dodgy plotting. It's definitely a case of style over substance, and the whole thing builds to a flashy and brutal fight scene, nothing more. Yet the CGI is pretty decent, and the sight of old-timers like Richard Ng, Fat Chung, and Kara Hui getting their teeth (sometimes literally) into the material is irresistible, and this is a lot of fun if you're in the right mood.
I won't declare this one a total loss, as it has its good parts but as it goes on and on it starts to get too fuzzy to follow. Even laughable here and there I might say, cause some scenes are way too typical "Asian horror that won't end already!"The good parts: as everyone else said, long live the effects, nicely done, captivating even; the plot is OK, especially the first 70%, where you find out more and more, things start to get together and you are intrigued; characters are all OK.The bad parts: the never ending finale!; the extremely poor twist; some scenes make pretty much no sense. All in all, if you into Asian horror, guess you have to add Rigor mortis. But if you looking for a late night scary movie, it might be better to look elsewhere. This goes more in the fantasy section to be honest.Cheers!
"Rigor Mortis" is Hong Kong's call-back to new resurgence of horror/fantasy. Billed as a feature film inspired by a popular the popular Vampire films of the 80's. this movie gives us a dark, wondrous nightmare. Starring Anthony Chan, Siu-Ho Chin, Kara Hui, Hoi-Pang Lo, Richard Ng, and Hee Ching Paw. The plot revolves around an ex actor on a downward spiral, longing for death, who moves into an apartment tower where realm of supernatural and humanity are entwined. "Rigor Mortis" offers a fantastical fantasy world of horror, drama and Hong Kong action. The story is multi-layered with lives tangled in a hellish fate. There are elements of melodrama and gore that move in a wonderful ballet of emotion and carnage. I feel that the story works as a modern retelling of some ancient Chinese fable, the concepts and character development seem so complex and powerful that it just screams of morality wisdom from the past. Either way it is a tale that embraces both the old supernatural beliefs and contemporary style that proves Hong Kong's dominance over this blended fantasy/horror genre. The special effects and soundtrack utilized in "Rigor Mortis" is top notch. The sounds are creepy, often creating a dark atmosphere of desperation scene after scene. The sets where depressing, lifeless tombs of fading lives that would send chills up Takashi Shimizu and Clive Barker's backs. "Rigor Mortis" uses some pretty spectacular CGI and practical effects for the fantasy and horror elements. Epic visual moments weave into the film in true whimsical opulence while the blood soaked gore combined with the chilling horror scenes create a nightmare fantasy that captivates and entertains. Just based on "Rigor Mortis" as an independent entity untethered from it's inspiration, homages and such I found this to be one of the best horror/fantasy films that I have ever seen. "Rigor Mortis" is Juno Mak's masterpiece and a must see film!
It's not a stereotype Hong Kong horror movie for the start. So if you are looking for those genre of movie, this is definitely not for you. It's been long since there's a representative movie for the Hong Kong movie industry. Rigor Mortis falls in that category, one which possibly can turn the tide of the industry, if the other Directors picks up the finer points of the movie and understand the new consumer pattern of the current generation of movie-goers, and stop mass producing those hilariously distasteful slap-stick movies.Watch it with an open mind, and the plot will suck you in before you knows it. There's a certain amount of gore and violence, not excessive though. Nicely shot scenes and generally tight plot.My only issue is the ending, but that said aside, it is much because I was expecting something more at the end. Otherwise, a great movie which I'll recommend for all Mr Vampire series fans.
