I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
The film expresses the balance between life and death/decay as a battle between miniature creatures and beings not unlike ourselves. The theme is that man must help forests or Eco-systems to live or else they will die. The story is aimed at younger children with a simple formulaic plot.Mary Katherine comes home to visit her father who is considered unbalanced because he believes in said creatures. This is a special time that only happens once in a 100 years, when the queen of life gets to choose her heir...and then you guessed it. This was a puffs moment for me, but not as bad as when Aerith Gainsborough passed into the light. From here you can write the rest.Mildly entertaining for adults.
The film is faboulously colourful, but the story lack depth and the characters are not all that interesting. With big expectations for the film, I must admit I was a bit disappointed, although still entertaining. The 'comic relief' characters are downright silly and would have been better without, as they appeal more to a very young demographic.
Really? You choose to name your film 'Epic'? That's like naming a film 'Colourful' and it turns out to be black and white, you just know you are never going to reach those expectations. Maybe it's an acronym? Extremely Playful Insects Cuddle. I don't know. Anyway, not a bad animation at all. A daughter visits her father who is obsessed with the concept that there are small living creatures residing in the nearby forest. She magically shrinks and is caught in the midst of a woodland war. Blue Sky Studios have crafted another gorgeous animation. The photorealism in both the character models and natural environment evoke a sense of fantastical awe, conjuring a new world on a minuscule scale. The vibrant colours are used to create a symphony of blooming flowers, picturesque skies and even ominous dead trees. The story is simple, leafmen must defend a bud which will soon bloom to be the life of the forest from an army of bugs that use decomposed skeletons as armour. Too simple perhaps? Yes, but incredibly accessible for younger audiences. There are some father and daughter relationship issues that are aimed towards the more mature viewers, so there are some aspects for everyone. The villain, Mandrake, was far too one-dimensional and had as much depth as a pond. The voice acting was serviceable, although Farrell, Beyoncé and Pitbull seemed to be out of place. Really was expecting "Mr. Worldwide" in the script. Speaking of, the screenplay is lacklustre with no memorability to it whatsoever. The character development is limited, as director Wedge purely focuses on world building and action sequences. Also, they just had to include an annoying musical number didn't they...urghhh. So yes, Epic isn't epic. However the aerial battles, stunning animation and rapid pacing heightens the entertainment, making it ever so watchable. Oh and surprisingly, I didn't hate the snail and slug characters...which is a first!
MK is a young girl who moves in with her father after her mother's death. However, her father is obsessed over proving that in the woods live an advance society of really small people. MK doesn't believe him, until she turns into one of those small people. Epic is a nice movie, not very good, but not horrible either. It's not Epic however. It sure has some action scenes, but the whole concept isn't adventurous. The script has some funny lines, and the story between father and daughter is good, but the romance... unnecessary in my opinion. The movie has many known actors (or their voices at least) and some of the scenes are beautiful, but the movie as a whole is so- so. So 4 out of 10, because I wouldn't watch it again.
