Good , But It Is Overrated By Some
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
THE X-FILES (FIGHT THE FUTURE) is an excellent bridge between seasons 5 and 6. It ties in perfectly, playing like the big screen middle "alien / shadow government conspiracy" episode weaving the series' THE END and THE BEGINNING together. Watching it today, I found it even better than I'd remembered it in 1998. Mulder and Scully are their familiar selves, thankfully, NOT going Hollywood! The introduction of the ferocious EBE's, along w/ the explanation for some of the more perplexing elements of the show, make this movie a gift from the sci-fi gods for all X-philes. Highly recommended...
I have seen about half a dozen episodes of "The X-Files" and therefore not enough to really call me a fan. What I saw was certainly good. I was quite eager to see a movie based on such a popular show. I believe that it was actually the relationship between Mulder and Scully that was said to have created the term "shipping". As someone who's really into that, it was a lot of fun to see their chemistry. I knew something would interrupt their kiss. Well, Mulder does mouth to mouth on Scully later, so we got that at least. The plot features a building being destroyed which is revealed to have covered up the deaths of people who died from an alien virus. I just felt like I was watching nothing more than just a long episode of the actual show. That's not what I want to see in a movie. It got really interesting toward the end where they were talking about getting rid of the virus but then the movie ends right there! I really was disappointed by that, but it's still not horrible. I especially like seeing the main villain, Cigarette Smoking Man, but I wish he had more screen time. **1/2
The X-Files - Fight the future is my favorite TV-Show translated to film, just because it was the reason why i was interested in the show in the first place. The greatest strength of this movie is that it's a great start for people who have no idea what X-Files is about, and it's a perfect bridge between Season 5 & 6 for fans. Also really great is the fact that all the people who worked on the show, also worked on this movie. The show is already very cinematic and one of the best looking TV-Shows ever made, but the movie is even more beautiful and you can feel that everyone has a blast showing things that weren't possible on the small screen. It's also more action packed then the show for that reason, but it's not non-stop action and zero plot, but much suspenseful plot, with three action set-pieces which are the more effective because of that.Mark Snow made the soundtrack for the show, which was already memorable and very tense, but now he can stand up and walk away from his synthesizer and go to a full blown orchestra, which hits it big, especially hearing the X-Files Theme in the cinematic version gave me goosebumps, BEFORE i was a fan of the show. https://youtu.be/oBCvGXL7teQ?t=116 All in all a very entertaining, smart, big and beautiful Mysterythriller, not just for fans...
I thought this film was like 'closure' to all the alien conspiracy theories that had been discussed in various X-Files episodes over the years. The acting was good and the film was professionally done. In retrospect it was -I think-much better than the follow up film in 2008 which I thought was basically a waste of time since it was not a continuation of the alien conspiracy uncovered in the first X-Files movie: it was like an extended episode of the X-Files TV show circa 1995. I also found it a bit too gory for my tastes. I had always liked the twists and turns of the plot in the TV show and I thought they did an effective job in this movie-I think they really had an impossible task but they pulled it off. I recently saw the first two episodes of the new X-Files TV miniseries. I had some feelings about it. I felt that it didn't seem to reflect that a massive alien conspiracy had been uncovered/proved & dealt with within the confines of the first X-Files movie. The first episode opens with a voice over by Agent Mulder basically saying 'I have never found a shred of proof of the existence of aliens.' In light of the first X-Files movie that would be absolute nonsense. Not only did Agent Mulder find proof of aliens on Earth in the first X-Files movie he came into close physical proximity with actual aliens. That is more than 'evidence' which he claims in the voice over of the first episode of the miniseries he has yet to come by. I can accept a lot from a science fiction/mystery orientated TV show like the X-Files-but a denial of major plot premises of past efforts albeit in a movie isn't one of the things that work for me. See this film-its probably the last good thing they did related to the X-Files TV show.
