Let's be realistic.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Its not easy to find a worse actor than JCVD, however, they went above and beyond when they found Alain MoussiDon't get me wrong I loved the first Kick boxer movie and other JCVD movies such as AWOL, Blood Sport etc........The thing with those early movies, is that although the acting may not have been great, but the films had heart and that feel good moment when JCVD was kicking the crap out of the bad guy.Its the same with JCVD terrible actor but he has style and Charisma.Although Alain Moussi plays he fight scenes extremely professionally, as an actor in this movie he has no heart or charisma. So back to the movie Kickboxer: Vengeance - the movie has great fight scenes and that is about it - the movie has no atmosphere, no heart, no fine good moment. The final fight scene although well choreographed, the scene is flat and has no hearth and the crowd started shouting Nak Su Kaw! It was torture!! They were trying to recreate the atmosphere from the first movie.....no it failed ... no heart beat.... ...... then there is the next film Kickboxer: Retaliation.....arrrrrghhhh!! ... its even worse than Kickboxer: Vengeance!!!
The movie is pretty bad. The story, acting, (lack of) development, etc. But this is the kind of "you get what you pay for" bad. You watch this movie probably because you grew up with Van Damme's first movies, and remember Tong Po as one of the first movie antagonists that actually gave you nightmares.None of that charm is here. Van Damme is without inspiration and makes you wonder why people ever thought he was a dominant or flashy fighter. The charm is in the new Kurt Sloan, played by Alain Moussi. Not that he is a good actor, but he has a boyish charm, combined with true martial arts skills. The actual surprise however came in 2 forms. (1) Tong Po played by Bautista. That guy is for real, nuff said. And (2) the many cameos by todays real fighters who can be recognized if you're a fan of Glory Kickboxing and UFC.Watch this movie like you would watch a remake of Mortal Kombat, or a remake of the Turtles. Therefor this is an acceptable remake of the original Kickboxer with a few nice worthy moments. Just don't expect anything from Van Damme, because those one or two slow kicks aren't worth staying awake for.
It is not a bad movie in the sense of the whole meaning. But I would have preferred to see a guy like Scott Adkins having the main role. The choreography and the story line are fine but the problem with Alain Moussi is that when fighting Bautista , he doesn't give the will to use full force. Van Damme saves the goods by his fighting scenes with Moussi. The fight scenes between Bautista an Moussi are well choreographed.Watchable and enjoyable but not on par with the original
What should have been an enjoyable B grade action fest, "Kickboxer: Vengeance" instead is a lazy, insulting, rushed, and blatant cash grab totally missing out on what made the original film a cult classic and loved by so many people, it's a laughably bad attempt at rebooting a film that should have been a cakewalk, at least as far as direct to video remakes go. So you're probably asking how JCVD is in the film, he is to most people the only reason to watch the film after all, well, he's...there, he's just there, not giving a crap, in fact no one gave a crap when making this film, I mean I don't blame them, it's a direct to video remake of an 80's B movie, but was it really THAT hard to do it well? Not even the team handed the task of putting subtitles in the film could do their job, who in the hell thought it was the best decision to make the subtitles of the film in all caps? What's most laughable is the dubbing job they did with JCVD...yes, they dubbed JCVD with another person's voice, it's so hard to not notice it, as I said it's laughable. Even if you're a fan of the original, definitely don't waste your time with this film, it's not even better than the sequels.
