Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
Everybody Wants Some!!4 Out Of 5Everybody Wants Some!! is a character driven hilarious drama about a new add-on to the group of guys who blends in before the college even starts. First and foremost, it's a Linklater movie; it's sassy, it's 80's, it's a revelation. His nature of seeking out its selective audience may have grown habitual to them but everytime he pulls out the rabbit from the hat, it leaves them in an awe of it with such mature ideology that it makes you think twice. The writing is smart, gripping, adaptive, elaborative and just plain fun throughout the course of it. Linklater's world may feel sketchy visually but its three dimensional characters (despite each of them are identified with a specific property, it somehow managed to achieve it) keeps it grounded. The music is seductive and the songs are up beating that elevates the momentum at its best; the boys singing on the car and the disco themed dance, it hits the perfect anticipated note. The costumes and the hair-styles and the accent and the references in each conversation; every little aspect of it demands attention; it is a delight to encounter such a breezy feature. The performance objective is the only weakness in here and don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it just isn't palpable to its strong writing. Linklater; the writer-director, has never been so robust and raw where the structure of the script may be transparent, but what a sight it is; pure elegance. The mannerism of the bonding, a conversation from the scratch and layered thought provoking policy are the high points of the feature that helps it enter the major league. Everybody Wants Some!! is something that not everybody gets but if taken seriously and read between the lines, you might find your mind blown away in its poetic tone.
Another of those gems by Linklater. Movie has a very good feel about it and if you along with it and feel the old vibes, you will love it.
My wife laughs when I enjoy cheap B movies. I deleted it after the first 5 minutes. That says a lot!
1980. Jake is about to start his college education. He has a baseball scholarship and lives in a commune that consists of the entire college baseball team. College starts in three days and we see how he adapts and makes new friends.Written and directed by Richard Linklater who gave us Boyhood and the Before Sunset/Sunrise/Midnight series this is ostensibly the college version of what is, for me, his greatest film - Dazed and Confused. (Calling a sequel would be pushing it a bit far as there is no link between the characters). There are some similarities between the two - the dawning of the new phase in young people's lives, new experiences and fitting in - but quality- and feeling-wise the two are quite far apart. Dazed and Confused was wonderfully engaging, and immediately so, and had a great sense of nostalgia. It was also quite profound in the way it dealt with growing up.Everybody Wants Some!!, on the other hand, starts off rather dully, with Linklater trying too hard to make the characters cool and likable, and in the process making them irritating, and the plot doesn't really go anywhere for a while. The engagement isn't there to start off with and it all seems like Animal House or Porky's without the humour. It gets better though, with the characters gaining some depth (thus becoming more engaging), some interesting plot developments towards the end and a reasonably profound ending. It just takes patience to get there - I was ready to give up after less than 30 minutes.
