Crying Freeman 6: The Guiding Light of Memory
CRYING FREEMAN: FINAL CHAPTER -- THE GUIDING LIGHT OF MEMORY (1993) is the sixth and last volume in the OAV series of Japanese anime adaptations of the "Crying Freeman" manga. A hard-hitting tale of violent criminals engaged in a brutal turf war, it is easily the best-written and most stylishly directed since the first in the series (PORTRAIT OF A KILLER). This one tells the story of a young Japanese Yakuza who takes over the Russian supply of drugs and weapons to Japan and cuts out the involvement of the Hong Kong-based 108 Dragons. Freeman, the hitman of the title and the 108 Dragons' star player, goes to Japan to investigate and gets framed for a succession of assassinations of top Yakuza bosses. The chief enemy here, Tsunaike, is aided by an icily sexy Arctic hit lady, Tanya (described as "Eskimo" in the subtitles, although she looks more Siberian), who is frequently seen in the nude in regular trysts with Tsunaike.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

Eye candy and art? My god yes; this movie is Sailor Moon's finest art detail that you'll ever see from the series; this is in fact the best art you'll see before Sailor Stars which takes a hit in the art department. The quality here is exceptional. Colors are the best I've ever seen in the series; shading is typical Sailor Moon and fans to the series should recognize it from the first series; art detail is something out of the third and fourth season, but the style of the characters drawn seems to be a combination and throwback to the first season. The movie, is hardly realistic as far as design – everything is uberly colored, looks like it is basked in pastel lighting and otherwise uber saturated without being overly lighted. Sailor Moon has always been about this and stood out for its art. The only complaint I could say about the character designs it that they seem uberly skinny compared to their television show counterparts – characters look uberly skinny ala anime, yet maintain a 'Barbie'-ish style design – young Chibi-USA (Rini) is literally adult proportioned (for anime), yet still looks like a young kid. Older characters, just by four years, are suddenlyWhen watching the opening montage; it is nice to see the characters in their youth; it's a nice change for the characters and fans that have followed the series up until this point. However, when finally seeing the movie in the swing of things; it becomes apparent what most of the series has been about when it wasn't following suite with 'monster of the day'; the series bears reminiscent to old "Peanuts" style comic strips where characters live their lives and enjoy both the joys and pitfalls of their actions.Pacing of the movie plays out like a well made movie – something of the modern era. It's hard to see until you've seen a modern movie – this movie holds its own in this department. Yet, it's old – it doesn't show it – it just looks like a cartoon with a very sharp drawing style and overtly saturated environment of colors. Music is good, plays out where it should – and the minimal use of sound effects is tastefully done where due. There is definitely more eye candy and animation going on before there is any sound effects; voice acting for my copy was in English, but by this point the dub for America has peaked and the characters sound and act how Americans have come to expect.Let's talk about individual characters – each is stylized with a specific style – right down from their wardrobe to their looks. Each character does not have much of a distinct personality, but as far as this version is concerned, it is reflected more in their attitude and voice acting.Lastly, the movie has the typical shoujou transformation sequence. They are adorned like super heroes, strangely enough – yet they also look like girls in dresses and tuxedos like a masquerade. The variety show kicks in the minute the outer senshi appear; they seem to have lots of acrobatics with a show-stopping number in addition. There is little way in the mood of emotional drama; though the emotional distress and discomfort of the characters does play out a few times. It's all plot until an evil madwoman appears to use the world as her own tool; why she wants to do it, isn't really alluded – other than the fact it is nothing short of a battery for her own usage. One of her own henchmen turns on her and proves to be her undoing. The movie alludes to numerous moments between love and friendship and sweet emotions triumphing over all. This is the main theme of the movie.Enter the realm of candy coated dreams, a world in which dreams are a false reality and a moon princess intends to stop it. It's only a little over an hour long, but wonderfully made for what is presented on screen. I've seen some three hour live action movies that don't go this far and in-depth.The evil queen is out to kidnap and steel the dream energy of the next generation of youth and the Sailor Senshi are here to save dreams and put an end to her terrorism. She isn't really out to be a terrorist; she just uses terrorist activity to get what she wants – dream energy to fuel her blackhole – essentially a giant battery.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/?p=7882).

I would never not purchase a Sailor Moon product, even the ones that I don't love the most. That aside, I didn't enjoy this Sailor Moon movie. Mostly, I didn't enjoy the whole Sailor Moon SS season of Sailor Moon. I found the relationship between Serena, Rini, and Darien disturbing and annoying. I also thought that there wasn't enough emotional pull in the movie, Sailor Moon is known for making you cry in sorrow, or joy, but this movie wasn't that empowering. Also it was too action packed, it was all about fighting and then some more fighting, and although I am not opposed to action I except more out of a Sailor Moon project. I except emotional pull, romance, tears, and tidbits of the typical teenager's life. I felt ripped off on that front.

If you are going to see this series of movies, please see them in order! it can really make for a head-warper if you watch these three out of order. Enough of that now, about Super S. The movie just plain-out kicks ass!! It's got a great story line, the animation is extremely good in some parts, and the last battle is absolutely insane (would YOU wanna take on a black hole??) All in All, this movie rocks hard, period.

This movie is highly recommended for fans of the Sailormoon television series. However, for people unfamiliar with the series, I recommend seeing the Sailormoon R movie first out of the three. The plot is more interesting and the villains are more complex/sympathetic than this one. Also, if you are not a fan of ChibiUsa/Rini, this movie is not for you.If you are looking for appearances of the elusive Sailorsaturn/Hotaru, you 'll be disappointed- she does not appear in this movie. The dream imagery and music, as well the development of Sailormoon's character and her relationship with Chibimoon, are the strong points of this film.
