Load of rubbish!!
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
The trailer for Cold Weather got me really, really excited. I was hoping for a cool, different mystery film. However, when I got to watching it, I found myself... wanting. Cold Weather had a lot of potential, but it's lost in a quagmire of an uninteresting mystery, unlikable characters, dreary cinematography and a badly constructed script. I was hoping for this kid to be some sort of cool Sherlock Holmes-type, but he came off (to me at least) as a loser. Why should we be interested in this guy if he has nothing to offer us but mumbles and misery? It's almost as if he wants to be a detective, but... isn't. The film kinda picks up near the end with the car sequence, but it's far too late into the film and not long enough. And that... ENDING... ARGH!Somebody on here keeps saying that the film isn't about the mystery. But if it's not about the mystery, and the characters are just a bunch of mopes, why should we watch? An Utter Waste of Time. Skip it. I recommend in place of this movie the films BRICK and ZERO EFFECT.
I've read both positive and negative reviews for this movie. The one thing both negative and positive reviewers can agree upon is the ending is terrible. It just stops. That's it. There are theories on why the director decided to abruptly stop the movie: someone spilled coffee on the script and they only used the parts without coffee stains in the movie; the camera ran out of batteries; the director was asked for a permit to shoot a movie in Portland, and, when he couldn't produce one, he could no longer shoot in Portland and decided to make the movie with what he had already shot; etc. Before the ending, I disliked: 1. Terrible dialogue that was plodding and tedious. I also disliked the acting. When the characters are merely sitting around mumbling to themselves, they seem believable. But when they have to show anger, fear, or tension, it's not believable.2. Overly-long shots of nothing important: shots of people sleeping for 2 mins; 2 min shots of people eating in silence while the director stands 50 yards away; 5 min shots of people eating Swedish fish and mumbling; etc.3. The fact that the first 40 minutes were useless in terms of plot and character development. And the abrupt disappearance of Carlos and Rachel in the third act. When I watch a movie, I want to walk away seeing something unique: story, cinematography, directing, acting, music, special effects, etc. This is what I got from Cold Weather: a cautionary tale on how not to make a movie.
I had to include the spoiler notice, but guess what, nothing happens!! Honestly, the movie just ends like they they ran out of film. Just when you think they might have stumbled on the first clue, the movie ends. That's it. The movie ends. Was there a plot? I don't think so. I waited for a plot, but I just got the credits. What a complete waste of time. For the tiniest of moments, I thought there might be a conclusion, but no. It just effing ended. In a parking garage of all places.Honestly, this movie is why Hollywood doesn't shoot more movies in the Pacific Northwest. Apparently, PNWers can't finish a movie. It just ended. Just like that. It just ended. I am so disappointed.
As all the other reviews state, this movie is different. It's low-budget, slow, quirky, simple, odd, alternative... whatever. If you're open minded and in the mood then it's tolerable or maybe even enjoyable. It starts off slow and slowly picks up the pace after the mystery starts maybe half way through. Then there's more action and more interest as the characters try to figure things out. At this point you become more interested to find out what happened. But then at the most suspenseful point the movie just ends. I couldn't believe it. Artsy is one thing but no payoff at the end of sitting through 90 minutes of this movie was cruel. Maybe I didn't get it - I don't know. I just don't know how you can make a movie with absolutely no ending.
