The Cactus of Klaus
The Cactus of Klaus
The grounds of Klaus Rinke’s Los Angeles studio overflow with an otherworldly cactus garden. The cactus—a plant firmly rooted in the horticultural zeitgeist—is a lifelong obsession of the enigmatic artist whose career as a pioneering conceptual artist spans more than 6-decades. Striking footage of the cacti garden reveals a surreal hidden geometry and illuminates the uncanny ways in which cacti and humans express themselves and coexist.

I. / II. / III.
I. / II. / III.
Originally shown as three separate films, I. / II. / III. is a triptych portrait of the most intimate proportions. Simple scenes within the domicile become completely entrancing as layer after layer of exposure unfurls onto itself. The movement of the leaves, the light, his father: all become hypnotic in this silent sonata.

Fortune
Fortune
The film takes the viewer on an embodied journey moving through a space in which its existence in the real or imagined is debatable. Alike how the alleyway is a physical bridge between two main streets, the film presents a series of juxtaposed images that might seem opposing at a glance – the seer and the seen, the outside and inside, young and old, low and high, the leaving, coming, and returning – but are co-existing elements that sustain the living and breathing of the alleyway. The tactility of witnessing inherently embodied by the 16 mm celluloid is mirrored by the witnessing(s) of the tourists, the residents, the non-human subjects in the space. Via a constructed soundscape in which sonic elements from eastern spirituality find their prominence amongst real-life sounds, and through an embodied camera eye that moves freely in the geographical space of the alley, the film evokes a sense of magical realism which gives texture to the meditation on the Chinese American identity.

The Last Taboo
The Last Taboo
Hard to imagine, but true: According to current estimates, out of 500,000 active male football professionals worldwide, under ten (10) are openly homosexual. While homosexuality hardly plays a role in other areas of life today, the topic seems to be completely taboo in professional football. The feature-length documentary THE LAST TABOO lets those who broke exactly this taboo tell their very personal stories alongside Thomas Hitzlsperger. Like the British professional footballer Justin Fashanu (*1961 in London; † 1998 in London), who broke this taboo for the first time in 1990 and paid for it with his life. His niece Amal tells his story. Marcus Urban, on the other hand, was about to make the jump to the Bundesliga as a teenager and, by deciding to come out, he also went against his big dream. The stories of the US professional Collin Martin and the British player-coach Matt Morton, on the other hand, suggest that normality is not far away.

Through their intersecting itineraries, modified life paths are then embodied: paused, twisted or illuminated by this decisive experience that will somehow politicize their existence.
