best movie i've ever seen.
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
I am not too big on the DC/Marvel Universes nor am I really fond of the 'super-hero' genre although I do dabble from time to time if I'm in the mood...I found Gotham Knight to be rather a refreshing take on Batman and it kept my attention despite everything I mentioned above. It's a 6 story anthology collection, with each one varying in animation style and overall approach (although) loosely intertwined. I fully found them all to be engaging with the exception of the 3rd installment which I found to be the weakest link of the 6. I really appreciated the varying animation styles and the overall dark(ish) tone which I always find a positive, especially in dealing with these (DC/Marvel) universes which are generally too sugar-coated for my taste. So all in all I could imagine perhaps some hardcore fans not enjoying it too much (I'm not sure), but I fully enjoyed it and found it it a rather refreshing and interesting approach to a genre that has really beaten a dead horse.
This is a 6-story anthology movie directed and animated by different people.1) "Have I Got A Story For You": I caught this part of the movie a while back on the TV and my first reaction was "wtf is up with the animation?". The lip- sync was atrocious, like terribly bad. And the story made no sense. Some random kids were telling stories about Batman and just as the last one finished talking, Batman appears out of nowhere fighting a bad guy for the sake of the plot. And then one of the kids saves Batman's life????? 2) "Crossfire": This one focuses on two policemen who end up getting in the middle of a crime battle. Sounds dumb? It is. Because it's very convenient, like the previous one. The animation looks like cheap anime, but looks WAY better than the first one. Kevin Conroy sounded way off as Batman in this one, almost as if he was replaced by someone else. The only good aspect of the story is that the story centers around officer Ramirez and we get to see Batman through her eyes. This character is later used in The Dark Knight in the same year.3) "Field Test": We get to see Lucius Fox creating new technology for Batman. For some reason, Lucius looks really orange in some scenes. And this Batman sounds different too. And he looks really dumb... he has a huge bat-nose.4) "In Darkness Dwells": This one features Killer Croc and Scarecrow kidnapping a priest. Now this is a good one, this is what the whole movie should've been like. Story centered around Batman and showing his detective abilities. Simple, awesome, effective.5) "Working Through Pain": It's not clear if this is directly after the previous chapter, but it goes through flashbacks of Bruce's training. This one wasn't as good as the previous one, but it was very a interesting take on his lore.6) "Deadshot": Finally, this last chapter focuses on the titular sniper assassin and adversary of Batman. The animation in this one is top notch and by far the best. It's very detailed and polished. The plot is solid and very entertaining. In conclusion, this movie goes from horrible to great. Honestly they should've just cut the first half of the movie and release it as an episode on whatever Batman TV show was airing at the time... or something, I don't know.6/10
I don't really care for animated movies...I like superheroes even less, but Batman is the exception, and when I read that this film bridges the gap between Batman Begins and the Dark Knight, while being written and directed by some of the same people, I got excited. Gotham Knight is a collection of six stories that supposedly tell us what Batman was up too, prior to battling the Joker in the Dark Knight. What I really love about Nolan's Batman movies is how realistic they are, and while Gotham Knight uses the same names and story line, it is anything but realistic. These stories are downright childish and boring. It's like reading Batman's diary and seeing his conversations and what he did at work today, some stories were better than others, but I was pretty much reading Batman's Twitter and it was as dull and simplistic as could be.
When Christopher Nolan's, "The Dark Knight", was being released, Warner Bros. Animation and some Anime studios (Including Madhouse and Production I.G.) worked on an anime anthology film similar to other anime anthology films like, "The Animatrix" and "Halo: Legends".Pro's: The film has some great animation and the voice acting was great especially having Kevin Conroy returning as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Also, some of the segments were interesting including the segment, "Walking through the Pain". It follow's Bruce Wayne traveling to India to learn how to control pain from a girl.Con's: The segment's, "Have I got a Story for you" and "Field Test", were boring.Overall, "Batman: Gotham Knight", is a great Anime flick and worth watching if you're into Anime or a fan of Batman.
