Extreme Makeover is a television program from ABC in which individuals volunteered to receive an extensive makeover in Hollywood. The show was created by television producer Howard Schultz. It first aired as a television special. It began airing in 2002 on Thursday nights at 8pm. A total of 55 episodes were produced. The show's first surgeon was Dr. Garth Fisher of Beverly Hills, California; after the pilot show the first six shows included Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Jon A. Perlman, M.D. FACS, Dr. Malcolm Lesavoy and Dr. Harvey Zarem as part of the original "Extreme Team," along with Dr. Bill Dorfman and Dr. Robert Maloney. Other doctors were selected for the next three years in addition to the above.
Borrowing heavily from the reality television genre, the show depicts ordinary men and women undergoing "extreme makeovers" involving plastic surgery, exercise regimens, hairdressing and wardrobing. Each episode ends with the participants' return to their families and friends, showing the reactions of their loved ones, who have not been allowed to see the incremental changes during the participants' absence.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which debuted in 2003, is a spin-off of Extreme Makeover. The home edition ended up becoming far more successful than the plastic surgery edition. Extreme Makeover: Wedding Edition was also piloted as a one-time special, but did not achieve sufficient ratings to be made into a series.

Evelyn, a 29-year-old waitress single mother struggling to raise three kids from Jacksonville, FL, whose 11-year-old daughter took it upon herself to write the show asking for her mother to be chosen for an Extreme Makeover, had a tummy tuck, liposuction of the inner and outer thighs, breast augmentation and teeth whitened and straightened.
Sharon, a 27-year-old wife and mother of three from Livonia, MI, who has an identical twin and has lived in her sister's shadow for as long as she can remember, had rhinoplasty, a chin implant, breast augmentation, received a new belly button because of a previous hernia operation gone bad, and teeth whitened and straightened.
We watched the transformations of Amy, a painfully shy 29-year-old cake decorator from Lafayette, IN, who's procedure included a nose job, lower eye lift, breast implants, teeth whitened and porcelain veneers, and John, a 56-year-old florist from Olathe, KS, who's transformation was inclusive of a facelift, upper and lower eye lift, fat injection to his cheeks, neck lift, ears pinned, teeth whitened and porcelain veneers.

We followed the journeys of Melissa, a 28-year-old waitress from Sacramento, CA, who was preparing to stun her friends at her 10-year high school reunion, and David, a 38-year-old member of the National Guard from Farmville, VA, who felt that his looks prevented him from being promoted to a recruiting officer.
To improve her look, Melissa had a nose job, ears pinned, breast implants, brow lift, tummy tuck, Lasik surgery and teeth whitened and straightened.
David's procedure included a nose job, brow lift, upper and lower eye lifts, chin augmentation, neck lift, teeth whitened and porcelain veneers.
