Simpang Masa
The meeting of three 19th century Javanese artists, Ronggowarsito (1802-1873), Mangkunegoro IV (1811-1881), and Raden Saleh (circa 1811-1880). The 19th century was a difficult time for the Javanese. A turbulent century, especially for the Javanese people who had just survived the devastating conflict known as the Java War (1825-1830). After the Java War ended, Java entered a new order that can be called the modern era. The post-Java War and Cultuurstelsel agreement led to a decline in self-confidence, social, economic, political, and cultural.

War and the Weather
War and the Weather
Artist Enid Baxter Ryce created an experimental documentary with a musical score by Philip Glass to portray, in moving images, the history of "atmospheric rivers," or streams of water vapor in the sky. Just like rivers that move water around on the land, atmospheric rivers—never visible to the naked eye—were a vital force in shaping the colonization of the American West. Today, the evolving scientific and cultural understandings of atmospheric rivers exemplify the complexity and importance of the stories we tell ourselves about science, climate, and the natural world. This film was created at the Days and Nights Festival held at the Philip Glass Center for the Arts, Science, and the Environment.

Newborn Sky: Women in the Democratic Army of Greece
Newborn Sky: Women in the Democratic Army of Greece
After the liberation of Athens from German occupation in 1944, a new era followed in Greece. Conflicts broke out between those who had fought against the Germans and those who had collaborated with them and the British Army. After the military defeat of the former, the signing of the Treaty of Varkiza signaled the start of the White Terror. Houses were set on fire, people were raped, beaten, murdered, imprisoned, and exiled. All this drove the persecuted men and women to take to the mountains, where they would form the cornerstone of the Democratic Army of Greece. In this documentary, the women fighters of the Democratic Army tell their stories. Women who were persecuted, women who consciously chose to fight, women who were conscripted to the cause, together they constitute the mosaic of experience of a civil war.

Kings of War
Kings of War
Kings of War merges Henry V, Henry VI and Richard III into one explosive performance about leadership. In successive kings, Shakespeare sketches an image of political leaders, face to face with the ultimate responsibility for life and death in times of war. Shakespeare’s kings are political leaders who come face to face with the ultimate responsibility: they must make the life-or-death decision of whether to go to war. Shakespeare draws us into the psychology of the rulers, while also revealing the machinations of their courtiers and advisors. Kings of War lays bare the mechanisms of decision-making in times of political crisis, exposing the dichotomy between national interests and self-importance.
