Synopsis
The essence of love is fading and is evermore harder to do. In this day and age, will there be love that is woeful and forlorn just for the sake of love itself? Love in Sadness is a love story that encapsulates the mythical-like fate of love that is so coveted that it ignores all bounds. In it, love outweighs what the world thinks, ignores the pain and anguish with it, and pursues its destiny. In the drama, Ma Ri is a beautiful girl, married into wealth with a seemingly perfect life. Ironically, her husband, In Wook, who looks like a more than ideal husband, is an obsessive lunatic who is also violently abusive. When he pushes her too far, she reaches out for help from Jung Won, an honest, smart, handsome plastic surgeon. And when he agrees to help her escape from her husband's hands, they fall in love. But In Wook, who is consumed by his obsession for her, isn't going to let her get away from his grasp. Watch as these two characters struggle to stay on their arduous road to love.

In an unstable state, In Wook returns home and confronts his father for what he had made him and for his mother's death. He then makes his way to Jung Won's house and abducts Ma Ri. When he tells Ma Ri that this is the only way for them to be together with a gun held towards them, Jung Won appears.

Ma Ri rushes to the gallery to reveal herself to In Wook knowing that he has a gun to Hae Ra's head. When she gets there, the gun turns on her, and with Hae Ra's brave lunge, Ma Ri makes a run for it. Meanwhile, Jung Won races to the hospital after listening to Hae Ra's secret distress call.

After finding out that Ha Kyung was dead, In Wook goes berserk. He goes to her workshop looking for her and tells Cheol Young to find a fingerprint to compare with his missing wife, Ma Ri. Later, he goes to the art gallery and forces Hae Ra to tell him where Ma Ri is.

In Wook misses Jung Won and Ma Ri leaving the sanitarium. However, he now knows where Ma Ri's mother is and now knows a way to get Ma Ri back. Without knowing the jeopardy they are in, Jung Won and Ma Ri go to see Jung Won's mother. Meanwhile, In Wook is enlightened by Seong Ho's slip of the tongue.

Ma Ri gets a call telling her that her mother has gone missing. She and Jung Won rush to the sanitarium while losing In Wook's tail and find her in the park. Meanwhile, Cheol Young finds a secluded sanatorium along the route Ma Ri has been taking and tells In Wook.

Jung Won asks Ma Ri if she would be all right being loved by someone who sees someone else in her. In Wook has a dream about Ha Kyung and Jung Won that is so vivid, he goes to threaten Jung Won. Later, Ma Ri makes a deal with In Wook and makes it clear to him to leave Jung Won alone.

Aware of who Ha Kyung was, Ma Ri tries to console Jung Won as he weeps in sorrow. Meanwhile, In Wook goes to the gallery to see what commotion he had started, but instead, he finds out Jung Won already knew. He then makes his first order with the gallery, putting 100,000,000 Won down as a deposit.

After seeing the pictures of Seong Ho and Ha Kyung together, Jung Won confronts Seong Ho about it and tells him never to show his face again. In Wook also tells Hae Ra about the affair to stir the pot. Later, Hae Ra goes to Jung Won's house and finds Ma Ri waiting for him.

With only ten days to get Ma Ri back, In Wook arms his hunt with more men and puts tighter surveillance on Jung Won and Ha Kyung. Ma Ri meets with Hae Ra and warns her not to trust In Wook. As she leaves, Ha Seong Ho recognizes her and learns of Jung Won's secret surgery. Meanwhile, Jung Won stays by Ma Ri's side and confesses his feelings for her.
Episode 21 : May I Confess My Love for You?

Ma Ri decides to get away from Jung Won who she believes will be in danger if she stays with him. However, right before she boards her train, Jung Won grabs her to an embrace. Meanwhile, In Wook goes to Hae Ra's house and tells her to prove her loyalty to him by telling the truth.

After the dinner arrangement, In Wook follows Jung Won and Ma Ri to her rooftop room. When Jung Won leaves, In Wook surprises Ma Ri and threatens her demanding to know where she hid his wife. Feeling that something was not right, Jung Won returns to the rooftop room and confronts In Wook.

Confused about the feelings he has towards Ma Ri, Jung Won goes to tell her that he'd like to dig deeper. Ha Kyung professes her love to Jung Won but is turned down by him. Later, Ha Kyung goes to meet with In Wook at his request, to discuss the Art Gallery Agreement Jung Won had said he'd cancel.

In Wook notices that Jung Won's office is in the same building as the gallery and decides to see him. However, he meets Seong Ho instead. When Jung Won returns to the gallery, he bumps into Ma Ri as she leaves. Disappointingly, he finds out from Hae Ra that Ma Ri was here as Ha Kyung to sign a contract with In Wook.
Episode 17 : I've Been Bewitched by Love

Ma Ri agrees to help Hae Ri by meeting In Wook as Ha Kyung, the director of the gallery. While Jung Won goes to visit his mother to tell her about what he had done with Ha Kyung face, Ma Ri assures herself that she isn't Ma Ri anymore. She meets In Wook as Ha Kyung, but In Wook's keen sense tells him otherwise.

Jung Won tells Hae Ra that the painter of the Cistus flower that they had been looking for, is Ma Ri. But when Hae Ra asks him about Ma Ri acting as Ha Kyung for In Wook, he tells her not to mention that idea again. Later, after receiving a call from In Wook, Hae Ra calls Ma Ri to meet.

Ma Ri contacts her old friend, Woo Seon, to ask for a favor in secret, but when Woo Seon goes to meet her, In Wook follows her. Seeing In Wook on her tail, Ma Ri aborts the meet. Later, Ma Ri gets a call regarding her mother who keeps asking to see her daughter.

After listening to what Seong Ho had dug up on In Wook and seeing the Gunha family picture, Jung Won goes to see Ma Ri. Ma Ri still trembles in fear that In Wook will find her. She reminds herself of the comforting words of Jung Won and tries to move on. Meanwhile, In Wook receives a call from Cheol Young, informing him of Ma Ri's mother's whereabouts.

Hae Ra tells Jung Won that Ma Ri's husband is Gunha Group's president, Kang In Wook, but it doesn't disturb him. Ma Ri also comes clean. She tells Jung Won that because of her husband's status, there was nowhere she could go for help. Meanwhile, Ma Ri tries to get back on her feet by selling her paintings.

After finding a place to live, Ma Ri goes to see her mother. Cheol Young reports to In Wook that Ma Ri and Hae Ra are friends, heightening his suspicions with Ha Kyung, Jung Won's wife. Later, In Wook visits Hae Ra at the art gallery to find out more and to ask why she hadn't mentioned that fact.

Down to the last person on the list, In Wook and his private investigator, Cheol Young, enter Jung Won's residence. Trembling in fear, Ma Ri locks herself inside the bathroom. When In Wook approaches the bathroom door, Jung Won stops him. In Wook then asks to see the purple dress, and when he does, he becomes speechless.

When Hae Ra goes to see how Jung Won is doing, she is lost for words when she sees Ha Kyung standing in front of her. At that moment, Ma Ri clues into whose face she has but doesn't blame Jung Won for doing it. She decides to leave his house. Meanwhile, In Wook and Cheol Young get down to the last two buyers of the purple dress.

With Hae Ra's face, Ma Ri goes back to look for her bag and sees In Wook's men searching the area. She realizes that In Wook knows that she is alive finding her handbag and starts to worry. Later, she runs into an altercation with some drunk men and calls Jung Won for help. Meanwhile, In Wook and his newly hired private detective, Cheol Young, try to get a lead with the purple dress.

Jung Won changes his mind and alters Ma Ri's face. After Ha Kyung’s funeral, the thought of regretting not doing anything weighs heavy on his mind. And for him, having Ha Kyung only in his memories isn't enough. When he performs the face-changing surgery on Ma Ri, he brings Ha Kyung back to life. Meanwhile, In Wook's men find Ma Ri's handbag and shoes nearby the place of her presumed suicide.

She then fakes her death making sure to keep In Wook on her trail. Meanwhile, when Jung Won returns from the States, he hears of heart-breaking news.

In Wook asks Ma Ri to have dinner together, the one they were supposed to have the day before, but she can't bear the thought of it and runs away from the house. She makes her way to Jung Won's house. When he sees her soaking wet and hunched, he takes her inside. She tells him about her misery and the reason behind wanting the radical surgery and implores that he perform it. Meanwhile, In Wook hears of her disappearance and tracks her down.

At breakfast, In Wook's father, Kang Il Gook, shouts at Ma Ri demanding to know when she will bear him a grandchild. Later, she escapes her bodyguards to meet with her friend who's going to fill her in about her painting winning a prize at the art exhibition.
