The Horses of Fukushima

Fukushima's Minami-soma has a ten-centuries-long tradition of holding the Soma Nomaoi ("chasing wild horses") festival to celebrate the horse's great contribution to human society. Following the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in the wake of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, local people were forced to flee the area. Rancher Shinichiro Tanaka returned to find his horses dead or starving, and refused to obey the government's orders to kill them. While many racehorses are slaughtered for horsemeat, his horses had been subjected to radiation and were inedible. Yoju Matsubayashi, whose "Fukushima: Memories of the Lost Landscape" is one of the most impressive documentaries made immediately after the disaster, spent the summer of 2011 helping Tanaka take care of his horses. In documenting their rehabilitation, he has produced a profound meditation on these animals who live as testaments to the tragic bargain human society made with nuclear power.

OK, this is a sort of SILKWOOD before its time, cause Mike Nichols feature was made in 1983, three years later. This TV film is rather OK, inspired from actual events I guess, but what I want to say is that the acting is so terrible, especially Powers Boothe who seemingly thinks about everything else whilst he plays is manager role. he seems to think about a joke heard a little earlier from a buddy of his. That's my feeling anyway. Margolin seems to behave like this from time to time on the movie, not always although. Bo Hopkins is fine. I have seen far better performances in many Tv épisodes, whith so realistic pictures of all kinds of characters.

The Plutonium Incident made for television movie is similar to the 1983 theatrical release Silkwood with Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, and Cher.I just watched this movie again last night on my VCR and I still found it a very good made for television movie.The similarities to Silkwood are not exacting ,but the plot is similar.The setting for the movie is nice and the cast is fine.Janet Margolin is an actress that you don't see much of. I have only seen her in movies a couple of times. I really like nuclear war movies and I like movies with intrigue.I am also a huge fan of Bo Hopkins, Joseph Campenella and the wonderful Powers Boothe.I recommend this movie to fans of good movies with a good story.I have this movie.

Its been decades (literally) since I saw this film but after talking with co-workers today about Karen Silkwood (today is the anniversary of her death) I began to recollect this movie. From what I remember Janet Margolin was a decent lead actress for this film. THe story wasn't lifted "directly" from the "Silkwood/KerrMcGee" case but you can see the essence of it in the film with its drama based on nuclear power plant, plutonium contamination, corporate coverups and a ending similar to Karen Silkwood's. This film has been lost to the foreign market so it is doubtful I'll get to see it and compare it to Silkwood on a real-time basis but if you happen to catch it, check it out and compare for yourself.
