Brain freeze has never been so bad once you’ve tasted Ale Cream, as four friends inadvertently eat some radioactive ice-cream, turning them into zombies. Only problem is they don’t see themselves as the undead, but as super soldiers.

Such a frustrating disappointment
Strong and Moving!
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
Last night I watched 'Aaah! Zombies!!' (aka 'Wasting Away') on the Chiller channel. I really wasn't expecting much, just a typical low budget zombie movie. Instead of the usual, it turned out to be a VERY funny film. The story was presented from the zombie's point of view often with hilarious results. I have not seen a horror film this funny since 'Shaun of the Dead'. In fact this movie is arguably even funnier than that was to me. The premise is that the military develops a serum that is supposed to turn average soldiers into super soldiers. Reminded me of how Captain America was created. Instead the serum turns a soldier being tested into a flesh-eating zombie. Later the faulty serum somehow finds its way into some ice cream eaten by four young friends, two girls and two guys. For some reason they eat it regardless of its strange green glow. It turns them into zombies only they don't realize it till much later in the story. The film is presented in both B/W and Color. The color scenes are from the Zombies point of view, the B/W 'Night of the living Dead' looking scenes are from other peoples view point. Or was it the other way around? Anyway, it was an imaginative idea on the part of the film's makers. The zombies don't see themselves as moving slow at all, instead they see the normal people as moving very fast and think they are the ones acting strangely. To each other the zombies seem normal just has they had always been except they are much stronger and can't be seriously hurt by bullets and the like. It's only others that see them as slow moving decaying corpses that growl. Later they finally see themselves in a mirror and realize the truth. There is also a very funny fifth zombie that is a janitor in the military who had the rank of private first class. He thinks he has been turned into a super soldier and acts accordingly. He's very convincing to the other zombies...for a time. This character and his military like noble attitude adds to the film's fun. Later of course more zombies join them as they too are infected. Finally they are all on a quest to find a sort of promised land where they can all live in peace and not worry about the crazy humans out to destroy them.I especially enjoyed the segment in the bowling alley where the zombies bowl against some drunken bowling teams who at first don't notice anything unusual about them. Another especially funny scene is when a boy zombie goes to speak to his girlfriend's family about dating her. His girlfriend is also one of the undead. Her family is understandably horrified by his arrival at their door.I recommend this film to anyone that enjoys a good horror comedy full of belly laughs.
Wasting Away is not a great film in my opinion, but it does do what other zombie films haven't done. It takes the perspectives of the zombies themselves, which hasn't been seen in any zombie film before. The uniqueness of this concept really made this film worthwhile. Using a comedic approach, there are a couple of good jokes here and there and overall it is a pretty damn funny movie. However, the acting is somewhat sub-par.If you look carefully enough you can see that the actors and the director did a pretty horrible job with this film, definitely not Christopher Nolan. Luckily this film didn't require special effects, otherwise it would've killed it.Overall, it was a film worth watching, although it was slow in some cases. I honestly ended up fast-forwarding most of the movie, so don't take my review too seriously. 6/10 because it is just over the borderline of being worth watching.
I am so sick of seeing the same tried and worn out story lines in Zombie movies. This movie is a much needed kick in the head to all movie writers. Stop feeding us the same old garbage. From the beginning this movie is sharp, funny original and far better then 90% of the low budget Zombie flicks I watch. Kitty Go Boom is the best line in Years. No reliance on flashy effects or over shocking blood and guts. This movie moves on the story and character development.I now feel bad for all those Zombies I cheered being killed in the thousands of movies I wasted my time watching before this one.Zombies need love to.
In any sub-genre of films, the zombie genre gets as much flack, or more, than any other sub-genre. At times it feels like these film-makers really are running out of ideas. But every once in a while you're given a breath of fresh air in a seemingly moldy genre. As with Colin (2008), what we have here is a flick that easily exceeded any expectations I had of it. The only expectations I had were that I hoped it wouldn't suck. And it most definitely did not.Wasting Away is a zomedy...do people say that? Zomedy? Is that frowned on? Or should I say Zom/Com? I'm gonna go with zomedy for now...then again, maybe I'll go with combie. Or maybe...I'll just switch it up and use all three. Yeah, that's what's gonna do down. So Wasting Away is a low-budget combie that in my opinion delivered a pretty damn satisfying flick. Our story revolves around a group of pals, two girls/two guys and one failed secret super soldier serum. To get a bit more specific the military, after failing with a super-soldier experiment attempted to dispose of this glowing green formula. Of course, along the way the truck on route to dispose of the stuff crashes and some of this toxic waste stuff gets into a carton of milk that one of our lead characters dumps into his soft-serve beer flavored ice-cream machine. And poof, after a little taste taste they're now, oblivious to them, zombies.Wasting Away is a zomedy that had a great idea at it's core. Throughout most of the running time our characters have no idea they are zombies, and this leads to some genuine comedic moments. You're given perspectives from their point of view (shot in color), and perspectives from the non-infected point of view (in black and white), and this is where the movie thrives. As they walk around thinking they're acting totally normal, the style will switch to black and white, and a normal dude taking a whiz behind a dumpster will look up and see a bunch of zombies shuffling towards him. Then it'll switch back to their perspective again as they're walking normally to the guy taking a whiz, and they're trying to ask him a question. Again, switch back to the guy taking a whiz, and it just appears to be zombies making zombie gestures. May not sound that funny or fresh, but it totally is.This zom/com without a doubt suckered me into it's fun style, but this combie ain't perfect by any means. Out of the five main characters, there are only two with any above average acting chops, but with a decent script, it wasn't that big of an issue for me. Unfortunately the flick is also full of bullet sized plot-holes. They're the type of plot-holes you could fill with a silly and dumb idea, but they're there nonetheless, and they do make you roll your eyes, but overall they weren't that annoying. Without a doubt my biggest issue, surprisingly enough, relates to their unique back and forth perspective. I really enjoyed this aspect to the film, but it was no way used enough, and at times not used correctly. The point of using this was to create silly scenes of these zombies doing human activities. But they only truly capitalized on this a couple of times, when they had numerous occasions to do so. Why wasn't there a switch during the bowling scene? Why wasn't there a switch when the kid was trying to talk to the parents? Why didn't they show them talking to any drunk people? I can go on and on with missed opportunities. But I suppose they did a good enough job there, as we did see zombies celebrating, making out, and even attempting to serve food in a inconspicuous manner. And I can only gather that it was either budget reasons, or just poor editing room decisions to why there wasn't more zombie silliness.Jeez, I'm doing some rambling here. So let's wrap this bad boy up shall we? Wasting Away is without a doubt a moan of fresh zombie breath in a sub-genre that feels like it's becoming zombified. This is one combie that delivered much more than I thought it would, and also, now this is the make or break moment for my comment...it's a much better film than Zombieland. If you like zombies, and like comedies, and/or a mixture of the two, and of course don't mind low-budget flicks, then you should definitely give this one a chance.
