Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
Absolutely Fantastic
It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
just an all together god awful film. I was disappointed with Edward furlong the most because although hes not a great actor anyway, he's not bad in most of his movies. In this one his acting is just horrendous. I didn't get what he was screaming about for half the movie. the whole look of the movie is like something a bunch of high school kids would do for fun after downing a keg or 2. saying all that, for some reason I watched the whole movie anyway. mostly because i just couldn't believe how bad it was. as far as gore goes, Mal's(Edward Furlong) girlfriend getting cut in half was pretty cool..thats about it though. bad bad movie. for shame Edward.
"Intermedio" is a rather unremarkable Sci-Fi Channel creature feature.**SPOILERS**Years after the deaths of their father's, brother and sister Malik, (Edward Furlong) and Gen, (Cerina Vincent) and friends Barbie, (Amber Benson) and Wes, (Callard Harris) decide to bury old wounds and head off into the tunnels where they were supposedly killed. Winding up in a small town near the Mexican border, they descend into the tunnels and begin to experience flashes about their past. As they start to get picked off one-by-one, a legend about a mysterious creature that can move between dimensions is blamed. Struggling to stay alive in the tunnels, the group tries to fight off the creatures. The Good News: Even though it's a disappointment, there's still some decent moments in here. The setting is really creepy and makes for a great place. The walls give off a great eerie presence throughout, and are dark enough to really become spooky. They are generally just creepy and are quite frightening. The gore is quite nice, and looks pretty good as well. The deaths themselves aren't all that bad. One is sawed in half at the waist with razor blades, another has a metal chain through the eye, both hands get chopped off and one gets knife in the throat, which is quite gorier than it sounds. It has some more blood coming from the creatures themselves, who look pretty freaky and messed up. The fact that it has a pretty clever intro to the storyline is actually pretty good. It's not new or anything, but it allows for some more relatable experience to everyone else viewing it. It's a more common experience and it gets the viewer a little more involved, and any film that can do that isn't all that bad of a film. The Bad News: This really could've been good, it had the potential, but what really ruins most of this is the actual plot itself. It starts off as a great creature feature about a group of creatures loosened from another dimension onto ours, but then it changes course into becoming a supernatural revenge film. It really doesn't mix well and becomes a jumbled mess. The final half of the film is mostly at cause, mixing in a couple of twists that stick out quite hugely and don't really serve anything other than to stretch the film out. The fact that the film really doesn't even have a real strong plot is another strike. It's all been done before, and besides the protagonists twist, it's not that original. It can be seen coming along the way pretty much right all the way through, and that can be irritating. The opening half sets up this wonderful atmosphere of creepiness and dread, and then it gets completely ruined at the end with the clichéd ending that really destroys the credibility of the film. This really could've been good, but it's such a shame how it ended up.The Final Verdict: Another rather typical creature feature that isn't sure it wants to be one, this ends up being a weird combination of everything that doesn't really work. See it mainly if you enjoy the normal Sci-Fi Channel films they normally have, it will really appeal to that crowd more than anything. Otherwise, exercise caution with this one.Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity and drug use
Dead and dying as its known in Ireland is not that great. I just finished watching it around two hours ago. Kinda boring. I am in love with Edward furlong but he kinda needs to lose the belly! Oh gawd that amber benson one just got on my nerves thank gawd she died! She just drove me insane, gen had a gun she should have shot her, Hun stick to Buffy with the other bad actors! OK am i the only one who found it a bit strange that gen and malik hooked up? They grew up together it would be like doing it with your sister! the acting in this film wasn't all that great my personal opinion Edward furlong (malik) should stick to comedy! He's a great comedy actor! Detroit rock city genius but he was outstanding in American history x, he just got stuck with ''actors'' than can't act to save there life! Eddie and the old guy were the only one's who could act! MESSAGE FOR CASTING AGENTS PICK ACTORS WHO HAVE TALENT NOT FOR HOW BIG THE SILICONE IN THERE BREASTS ARE!!!!!!!!
Before I say anything that gives you a bad impression about this movie, let me first say this, Intermedio (or Dead & Dying as it's known in the UK, which is how I shall refer to it from now on) is pretty good as straight to video horror movies go. It's probably about the third or fourth best one I've seen. That said, it was also disappointing, probably due to the promise of it's idea being squandered by mediocre execution. Dead & Dying could have been a cool terror ride, but as it is it just slides in with all the other STV 'teens in peril' horror movies.Although it is a bit generic, what stops it from sinking into the depths never to be seen again is its fantastic cast. With the exception of the main character Jen's boyfriend, everyone in this film is giving it 110%. Key duo Edward Furlong and Cerina Vincent (watch this girl, she is totally wicked) both hand in warm, sympathetic performances that make you really want them to make it out alive, and Amber Benson gives a good go of it as comic relief too.The acting alone elevates it from the sludge, but unfortunately there isn't a lot else to it. The ghost effects are cool, and for a while very creepy, providing some refreshingly genuine scares, but once it's revealed that they aren't the true villains their ability to terrify dwindles, plus they all but vanish from the movie for the second half anyway. The horror element of this movie feels really tacked on, like they had a thriller written but they needed a horror so they augmented it with some ghosts and a bit of gore. The gore is a nice bonus, but it's pretty straightforward in comparison with films like Shredder or Curse of the Forty-Niner's gleefully complex overkill. This movie doesn't do anything you haven't seen forty or fifty times before. It's a shame, as this is a genuinely enjoyable movie, but it's tarnished with the feeling it could of been a lot better, like they rushed to get it out. Add to this a soundmix that is so unbalanced I wound up turning the TV set up and down about ten or eleven times, and you can see why I say it just fails to excite as much as it might. All in all, you could do much much worse than Dead & Dying, and it's worth a rent purely for Cerina Vincent and Ed Furlong, but you could do a lot better too. Give it a shot, don't expect miracles.
