That was an excellent one.
Excellent, Without a doubt!!
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Written and directed by William Wesley and starring Ted Vernon, Michael David Simms and Richard Vidan this film from 1988 is dark horror film much like you'd expect from the 80's. The plot is a little light on substance and the budget was evidently small but this film still manages to show some promise, although it doesn't fully deliver fully to its potential. This seems to be a cult favourite but when I ask fellow film fans and friends they haven't heard of it so it must have been so far under the radar that it practically burrowed or crawled. There aren't many killer scarecrow based films which is a pity as they could be really good as killers and bad guys, I'm certain that if this film had of been released now there would be a whole host of spin off and replications until the subject was dry but alas it looks like this was launched during the last wave of decent 80's horrors when the genre was on a bit of a slump. The story starts off by following crooks who have hijacked and kidnapped a plane, the pilot, the pilots daughter and their dog. There is no honour amongst thieves and when one of them try's to escape the plane with the loot the other crooks forces a landing in the middle of farm land in Mexico. This is where is starts going wrong. The crooks end up meeting at a creepy uninhabited farm but by then they are being killed off one by one by killer scarecrows. The scarecrows actually look really good and haunting, the only downside, and a general negative of the film, it that it's too dark to make out much detail. The film is shot at night- there are shots which were blatantly filmed during lighter times but then darkened up during post production but all in all it's a struggle sometimes to make out what's going on. I have to be honest, this wasn't the best film I have watched. The pace was weak, the cast were pretty poor, the script was predictable and the plot, as mentioned, was pretty poor too. In fact the only saviour was the horror of the scarecrows and the potential they had but didn't fully deliver. General effects are a bit weak but the horror and gore that the scarecrows deliver is good - at times on par with modern horror. As well as the horror of the scarecrows, the atmosphere derived from running around a dark, misty field filled with massive corn plants, not knowing what was going on works well. The film isn't that long at about 70 minutes so despite my negatives and the relatively poor rating I'm giving it, it is still watchable and it's not something I'd shy away from in the future. Good premise, poor delivery, could do better - 4 out of 10.
A group of mercenaries rob an Army payroll and flee via plane with two hostages. One of the mercs decides to take the money and parachute into the night. The others land the plane and pursue him. Soon they're in a run-down farmhouse being attacked by evil scarecrows.Action-horror hybrid with a thin script that wastes no time with silly things like setting up its story or developing its characters. Which is kind of the problem as writer/director William Wesley just wants to do "soldiers vs zombie scarecrows" and damned if he cares how to make that happen. When I was a teenager I had this idea for a horror movie about a group of people in a convenience store being trapped inside and killed off one by one by demons. I was convinced it was the coolest idea ever (it wasn't), but I never really fleshed the idea out beyond its concept and daydreaming some effects-heavy scenes. Watching this movie makes me think of that because William Wesley clearly had an idea he was excited about but he doesn't go beyond that idea and really try to craft a good movie. He would do this again with Route 666, another movie with a decent premise but amateur execution. It's not a scary movie at all, focusing a little too much on action and not enough on being frightening. The actors are all forgettable. Even now, a few minutes after having watched the movie, I can't remember any of their faces. There's this irritating device of the mercenaries talking over their radios that gets on your nerves and ruins any chance of building suspense. Wesley is afraid of letting the movie be quiet, even when it desperately needs to be. I don't think there's ten whole seconds in this movie without someone talking. This isn't to say this movie is a complete stinker. It has some nice cinematography from Peter Deming and a decent score by Terry Plumeri. So a reasonable amount of creepy atmosphere is present throughout the picture. Also, considering the film's low budget, the special effects are impressive. But I can't help but think this is such a missed opportunity. Had Wesley just spent a little more time on his script and a little less time worrying about the violence and gore, this could've been a good movie. As it is, it's worth watching once but that's it. Thirteen year-old boys will probably like it more than most.
Alright... this is some classic Sunday afternoon movie action. It's cheesy, it's a little creepy (sometimes really creepy), and basically what an 80's horror flick needs to be!It's far from top end, and far from well written, but it's fun. With a bit more of a budget, it could have spawned a bunch of terrible and equally implausible sequels. Actually, it probably should spawn a bunch of terrible sequels, with the better effects we have today...If you like the cheese, and if you like the goofiness that made 80's horror what it is, you'll like this movie. If you're looking for a dramatic crime/horror combo, this will probably leave you disappointed. Have fun calling the kills and wondering who's going to make it out alive!
Maybe I went in expecting too much. I read a review of this film on here where the guy gave it a 10/10. He stated that it was much better than any Halloween or Friday the 13th any day. I admit, most Friday the 13th movies blow. This movie was equally horrific. It is slow paced, dark, and not filled with many quality kill scenes. It also has an ending that will make you want to blow yourself up with a grenade. There has to be a better way to end the movie. Give me the budget for this film and I will at least generate a legit 5/10 movie. I have seen hundreds of cheesy horror films, especially ones from the 80's. Comparatively this one ranks way low on my list.
