Fresh and Exciting
everything you have heard about this movie is true.
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
I'm a little bit BIAS when it comes to this movie because t has my future baby mamma "Gabrielle ANWAR" and my boy Forest WHITAKER. i could watch a 90 minute video of them just staring into a camera or clipping coupons, or raising multi-racial kids or something. However a young woman who fled her town under mysterious reasons returns to the town to do a book. Upon residing at a hotel she's haunted by flash-backs premonitions and for-shadowing and spirits and ghosts. You now spend the rest of the movie trying to figure out what tragic event has or is going to befall the heroin that the spirits are telling her about. There's a few twists and turn some scenes are predictable the others aren't. It was a good flick.
Oh no, it's yet another in the seemingly endless Hollywood retreads of the Asian Horror trend as done by hipsters who know film history and yet don't have an original thought of their own, a trend that began with The Ring and cannot end soon enough. Now this one isn't a remake of a Japanese or Hong Kong original, but it uses all of the styles, devices and what are now clichés of this sub-genre. If you think you've seen it already, that's because you have, and there's nothing at all that will surprise you, except the inordinate amount of "buses" in the film.If you know not what is meant by a "bus", then you need to do some research into one of the finest producers of horror films ever, Val Lewton. A "bus" is the popular term for creating a sudden shock by introducing an unexpected event, like a sudden image popping into screen or a loud noise. One of the lousiest films ever, AX 'EM, has one great "bus" that makes the whole film worth seeing. Anyway, It's one way to create shock, but has become overused because it is a fairly easy method. All of the actors including the lead, and excepting Forrest Whitaker, are going through the motions here. Whitaker is just plain great in everything he's in thanks to his considerable talent. Other than that, you can drop this one off to sink into your local bog where it belongs. Thank gosh I only paid $2 for it! Still a McDonald's burger and small fries would have been better and the same price.
OK, now here is a ghost story that came way under my radar and turns out to be a superior ghost story with a couple of twists. A lady children's book author is plagued with nightmares of a little girl disappearing in a swamp and images of an old house. When viewing a television story, she notices the house in her nightmare and the surrounding area, specifically a marsh where she keeps seeing and following this little girl. She tracks down the property and moves into the house, in a small remote area close to a little town. After installing a door she finds in the cellar, strange things begin to happen and what were her nightmares are now becoming too real. Yes, the house and the marsh hold deep secrets in the town and the house, and she enlists the help of a local paranormal consultant played very well by Forest Whitaker. He moves into her house with his equipment and quickly realizes the supernatural is at work. This movie succeeds on every level with excellent performances, and a very tight story that keeps you guessing until the final reveal. Are her nightmares really lost memories of a past she has forgotten, and if she is the little girl ghost then how is that possible? All the questions are answered, and I had a real ball with this one. Highly recommended.
Over the past few years I have despaired of the horror genre. All of the recent films have been sick, over the top and unnecessarily gross (House of Wax etc). I grew up with the Carpenter movies where shocks and scares were important. This film is a refreshing change, yes its slow, yes its subtle but the important thing is it is scary! Claire Holloway is a likable protagonist. A children's book author haunted by vicious night terrors. She is told to face the source by her psychologist. She then sees a documentary that includes a shot of the house in her dreams. Claire is played with feeling and maturity by Gabrielle Anwar, whom obviously enjoyed the script and filming. Hunt is the stereo typical character of the piece. When his Wife and Son died he plunges himself into the research of the paranormal. Forest Whitacker is obviously intrigued by this film but not so much to give one of his most stellar performances. In fact if you compare his portrayal of Hunt to his character in Species, they are pretty much the same. The shooting of the film is excellent, the cgi ghost effects start subtly and build up nicely, the photography hits the right visual cues and the score adds to the tension and visual elements without giving away any clues as to what is about to happen. The only negative I have would give away some of the plot so you'll have to guess. If you liked House of Wax or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre do not watch this movie! However if you enjoy sitting round a campfire trying to scare your friends this is for you.
