There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

I was surprised when I came across this on HBO GO. I had never heard of it, nor the story that it was telling. After doing some light research, I decided to take the dive in and give it a try. I was not disappointed. Now, I'm not going to tell you this was a modern classic. I think the film is lacking in a lot of areas. However, I sure as hell enjoyed it. I thought Adrien Brody put on an excellent performance. I thought that a Ben Affleck who was still trying to find his footing as a star actor (at the time) put on a great performance as well. The editing of the film, particularly the color tone, made for the film to become a much more immersive experience. If you love Unsolved Mysteries, or any other type of show or topic like that, then this film is a no brainer. I bet that anyone you know who lived through the 50's would remember this case. It was a big deal back then, and to see it play out was a lot of fun.

Hollywoodland is about about the death of actor George Reeves (played by Ben Affleck), the star of the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman. Adrien Brody co-stars as a fictional character, Louis Simo, a private detective investigating Toni Mannix (Diane Lane), who was involved in a long romantic relationship with Reeves and was the common-law wife of MGM studio executive Eddie Mannix (Bob Hoskins). Reeves had ended the affair and had become engaged to a younger woman, aspiring actress Leonore Lemmon (Robin Tunney). Even tho it's slow as a film i think it succeeds on what it tries to accomplish you have a really good cast in a good movie the performances are very well done and the final verdict of the film is good and it tries to show you that Hollywood is not that innocent as we all think it is.

It's 1959 and George Reeves (Ben Affleck) best known as TV Superman is found shot dead in a house full of people. The police rules it a suicide. Questionable private investigator Louis Simo (Adrien Brody) is hired by Helen Bessolo to investigate the death of her son Reeves. As he digs into the case, the show flashes back to Reeves' time in Hollywood starting as a nobody trying to get his foot in the door. He has an affair with Toni Mannix (Diane Lane) who he doesn't know at first that she is actually the wife of a MGM studio head Eddie Mannix (Bob Hoskins). The movie is a little slow and a little long relishing in the noirish hard-boiled style. Allen Coulter is a TV director and that may be why the movie moves more slowly. It doesn't quite have the urgency. Adrien Brody's slow brooding mannerisms only accentuate the pacing. I like the era and the style. I could do with a quicker pace. Ben Affleck fits this character better than his other nice guy roles. He's a little dark and a little complicated. It signals a change in Affleck's career path for the better. The style is there but the pacing is lacking.

Hollywoodland is a good movie with a well developed storyline and a talented cast. The movie isn't extremely exciting or thrilling, but it is an interesting story,I much preferred the parts that were a biography of George Reeves life over the investigation scenes, the detective scenes were quite slow but Reeves life story was fast paced and very interesting.Ben Affleck did a great job as George Reeves on this film,a lot of people complain about him as an actor, but I think he's really good and I don't feel like he's "just acting",I truly believed he was Reeves, his personality was nothing like the way you would see Affleck on interviews.I wasn't very happy with the ending of the film, although I understood why they did it,it still annoyed me.Hollywoodland can be very slow, but it's still quite enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good biography film or drama.
