Best movie of this year hands down!
Absolutely the worst movie.
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
First of all, I have no idea there are so many bad reviews about this movie. I thought this was a great movie. I had seen previews for this movie and when I learned what it was about I knew I had to see it. I am not really a Tyler Perry fan, I mean I don't really care for Tyler Perry's movies, for example the Madea series, I just don't care for them. Anyways, I LOVED this movie. It was a lot better and different than I expected. This is a very powerful movie about the lives of 9 women, and the ways that their lives are all connected. There's Crystal, who lives with her children and her abusive boyfriend. There's Jo, who is a successful businesswoman with good money but stuck in a unhappy relationship with her husband who is trying to hide a big secret from her. There's Juanita, a nurse who is in love with a man who keep leaving her and hurting her and she keeps putting up with it. There's Tangie, who is a lonely girl who tries to cure her loneliness by sleeping with man after man so that she can feel loved. There's Yasmine, a young dance teacher with a dance teacher who is raped by someone she trusts. There's Kelly, who is a social worker who is devastated when she learns she cannot have children and she is also connected to Crystal, and Nyla. Then there's Nyla, she is Tangie's sister and is also in Yasmine's dance class. When Nyla discovers that she is pregnant she realizes that she is faced with a difficult decision to make. Whoopi Goldberg is also in the movie with a good performance as Tangie and Nyla's mother who is a religious fanatic. Phylicia Rashad is also in the movie as the apartment manager of the building that Crystal, Tangie, and Nyla live in. This is definitely a must-see movie in my opinion. It definitely has some strong emotional moments which made me cry and feel for the characters. This is obviously a different kind of movie from the usual Tyler Perry movies. It is not in any way a comedy. It is definitely a excellent, moving drama. I would not say that this is a chick flick either, I think men could watch this movie and actually enjoy it as well as women. This is one of the best movies I have seen in awhile. Please see this movie, I'm sure it will have an impact on your life!!!
This is the screen adaptation of Ntozake Shange's 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf". This title alone is heavy with imagery and poetry enough to anticipate what follows it. The film is more marketably titled "For Colored Girls" - which takes from it any arching, celestial beauty or hollowing pain."For Colored Girls" was adapted, directed, and produced by Tyler Perry. It's surprising that a man would be chosen for such an acclaimed and iconic piece of African American literature and black feminism. Initially Shange had qualms about Perry taking on the film: "I worried about his characterizations of women as plastic", referring to Perry comic works with his Madea character. Later she said Perry had done a fine job, but that the film wasn't quite "finished"."For Colored Girls (Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf)" is just that. It's not meant for everyone; it is an open and heartfelt letter, and you will know if it's for you. "For Colored Girls" shows the scars and salves, the bruises and bonds that can tear a woman down and then bring her back up again. This movie is not easy to watch, and it's not meant to be; life isn't easy, it doesn't pull punches, but neither is it completely without hope. This movie deals with abuse, infidelity, rape, abandonment, love, sisterhood, strength, and beauty. The colors of this movie are infinite. Each of the main characters has her own bow of the rainbow. The artistic palate full with some outstanding dramatic performances, dancing, opera, poetry, and heart. This movie is for the colored girls who have felt joy and despair, who have seen both sides of the moon. It was made for you, and I hope you get the chance to see it.Aloha
So I just watched Tyler Perry's adaptation of Ntozake Shange's play whose title is shortened here to For Colored Girls. It's quite a compelling drama about all these African-American women and the repercussions of their various tragedies. Each actress-Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Janet Jackson among them-brought their own dramatic talents to the fore which helped when it came time for the poetic monologues to be recited. I do have to admit that some of those passages were distractingly obvious when mixed with the more realistic dialogue but most of them were also very moving. In fact, since this was the first time Perry used material not of his own making, his touch isn't completely recognizable which is a good thing here. So on that note, I highly recommend For Colored Girls.
I an Very upper class happily married and have two great kids! I have seen and own all of Tyler Perry movies. I'm not some woman watching his movies eating ice cream on the sofa who doesn't have a man. (As another poster stated as if...that's the only people who watches his movies!) The fact that this is 2011...people try to stereotype everyone and everything is so SAD! OK...my review....I do not go to every movie as if it's the one film I will see this year! I'm not looking for Oscar worthy. I want an escape...I'm an easy critic! However....I Love Tyler Perry movies because they are about family and relationships! This movie takes DEPRESSING to an all time EXTREME from start to finish! Incest, Rape, Parental Abuse, Murdering small children!!!!! Everyone has been saying it's his best movie????This was like watching Charles Manson tell a Christmas story! It was Polar Opposite of the Movies I Love to see from Tyler Perry! My favorite being why did I get married!!! I was hoping for at least some kind of healing with some of these people! Mother daughter ....Sister relationship! etc etcAlso...good LORD I would think Black men would really hate this movie! The only redeeming thing that I thought was good was...when the lady told the woman that her insane husband dropped her two small kids from a window...that she was partially to Blame for Not Leaving him sooner! ....well DUHHHHH!!!! Everyone was a victim....I hate to give Tyler Perry a bad review!!!! The acting was Good...very Good....and Leave Janet Jackson alone...she was fine in this movie!
