Fantastic!
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
A psychiatrist must cure a young patient that presents himself as Don Juan, the greatest lover in the world. A great love story of the man presenting himself as Don Juan & his romance as well as with his parents - oddly improving the love of his psychiatrist's life to top it all off. Love and Tragedy are strong in this film.Top notch film - worth watching!9/10
First time I ever went to movies with my first girlfriend, first encounter with Johnny Depp and forever one of my favorite movies.9/10Character is based on Lord Byron's Don Huan, movie is produced by Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Kamen was in charge of music, main song is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, and with such geniuses as Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway and, one of the best actors of all times, Marlon Brando in leading roles, movie is simply perfect. In my opinion, essence of this movie, and also essence of life itself, is perfectly described in one of the last sentences of this movie: "Why not..."
Don Juan DeMarco is a romantic comedy starring Johnny Depp as John Arnold DeMarco, a man who believes himself to be Don Juan, the greatest lover in the world. Clad in a cape and domino mask, DeMarco undergoes psychiatric treatment with Marlon Brando's character, Dr. Jack Mickler, to cure him of his apparent delusion. But the psychiatric sessions have an unexpected effect on the psychiatric staff, some of whom find themselves inspired by DeMarco's delusion; the most profoundly affected is Dr. Mickler himself, who rekindles the romance in his complacent marriage. The movie also stars Faye Dunaway. The movie is based on two different sources: the modern-day story is based on director/screenwriter Jeremy Leven's short story Don Juan DeMarco and the Centerfold and the familiar legend of Don Juan, wherein flashbacks depicting DeMarco's back-story are based on.In the movie,a psychiatrist treats a most unusual patient, only to find that the doctor is the one who gains the most from their sessions. A young man in a mask and cape is standing atop a billboard, threatening to jump. When the potential suicide is finally talked down, he's brought to a psychiatric facility where after one doctor washes his hands of the case, he's placed under the supervision of Dr. Jack Mickler, an aging psychiatrist soon to retire. The patient informs Mickler that he is actually the great lover Don Juan, who has seduced over 1,500 women, but has fallen into a deep depression after being unable to win the hand of the woman of his dreams. Mickler has ten days to work with his patient and after which he will either be released on medication or committed to a long-term stay in a mental hospital. As Mickler talks with the young man, who speaks rapturously of the art of love, the doctor finds that his philosophies are helping to kick start his failing relationship with his wife, and he slowly becomes convinced that his patient might really be Don Juan after all.Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, it gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Johnny Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. While the performances by Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway elevate this likable comedy about love, illusion and delusion way above its inconsequential text. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood.
I was very disappointed in this movie. I rented it with such great expectations from a movie that has Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp in one and in the same movie. Alas, there was nothing but flat characters, the silliest accent I have ever heard an actor come up with, and suspension of disbelief was so hard I had to call a friend to moan what a silly movie it was. In fact was it not for my love for both Marlon and Depp I would have given it a zero! In an interview with the Actor's Studio, Depp said that the hardest thing about acting with Brando was trying to keep a straight face. I imagine Brando knew from the get go that the movie was a joke.
