Am i the only one who thinks........Average?
Admirable film.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
I believe that so-called critics of today have a sense of entitlement to their opinions. Which is absolutely okay on one condition.. know your facts! This film wasn't too terrible, and if you are not a professional critic, than you don't have a right to bash this movie! For a low-budget, Canadian film, it was quite entertaining to watch! So what alot of the mechanical situations weren't accurate. IT'S A MOVIE! Movies are meant to be enjoyed, not to be closely examined of every aspect! For example, Zombies aren't real, but there are still movies about them! I suppose you're going to say "oh this movie is rubbish because zombies aren't supposed to bite arms, they eat brains." People need to quit being tight-a**** and enjoy something fun for once!
Without going too much into detail with the actual story, the movie starts with a group of teenagers going on a weekend trip in a private plane. A (not very subtle) side story explains how two of the teens both lost one or more of their parents at a young age. A somewhat decent start. But for the following 40 minutes everything that happens can pretty much be summarized in a few choice words: mysterious dark clouds failing instruments random and pointless fighting and screaming Then the next 20 minutes can be summarized by: Evil tentacle cloud squid Hysterical Teens fighting And even more screaming Then we get 10 minutes of the movie Inception (as it turns out that all the events are just the result of one of the characters imagination/nightmares). And as soon as the nightmare is over, and the cloud clears, the surviving teens nearly miss hitting another plane (which as it turns out is them-selves and parents from another reality)The movie ends by none of the parents ever dying in the first place, and hence this movie never happening.Just to be clear, I have nothing against the plot itself, it think it could be a great short-film. (20-30min) But I do have a problem with a very thin story being told over a period of 90 minutes, combined with somewhat terrible acting and even worse CGI, and then all of that being crammed into a small Piper-Aircraft for 85% of the movies duration.Long story short: if you want the story of the movie, watch the initial 20 minutes, and the final 15 minutes, and skip everything else!
So what do we have here? Well, we have a perfect example of the worst type of movie. Some bad movies are so bad that they're fun to watch. Some bad movies have elements that make you appreciate them more than they deserve. And then there's movies like this, that are just a complete waste of your time. The movie starts out as a sort of teen movie, with the classic stereotypes in place. The sports hero who's a total bastard, the artistic boy, the slutty girlfriend of the jock who secretly has got this thing going on with the artistic boy. Annoying, but wait, let's turn to the main attractions. The female lead who's a pilot, and whose mother (also a pilot) died in a plane-crash, and her comic book reading nerdy boyfriend who's the only survivor of her mother's final flight. At this point you seriously should want to punch the writers. After a boring first twenty minutes or so, the movie turns into a small disaster story, about a malfunctioning plane. And to top it all of the final half an hour is devoted to turning this wreck of a movie into a implausible horror story inspired by Twelve Monkeys and HP Lovecraft. All of this could have worked out okay with proper pacing, believable dialogues, and some b quality acting. Unfortunately the plot is neither here nor there most of the time, all actors were borrowed from a soft-drink commercial, and their characters are about as 3-dimensional as a complementary magazine on a Ryanair flight. There was simply no point at which I cared about anything going on. One by one characters fight with each other completely at random. The female lead behaves as a control freak who has no control over anything, neither the plane (although she apparently trained to be a pilot), nor her friends, if you could call any of her passengers friends. If any of my friends behaved like these morons for only one minute I'd ditch them forever. But then again the female lead could be excused to have friends like this, because she is a total bitch herself. After watching them for more than half an hour you just wish the plane crashes, and kills all of them, so you can be spared from having to listen to any more of their annoying yapping.Don't get me wrong. I like B movies, and I like implausible stories, as long as they're made with some conviction. But this entire movie reeks of laziness. Lazy acting, lazy editing, lazy writing, all contributing to this loveless attitude of "that'll do". I'd like to take this opportunity to say no. It won't do. Stop wasting money and resources that could be spent on filmmakers and actors that are actually prepared to make an effort.
Altitude is a Thriller/Horror movie that never really lives up to anything. Even if you cling to a hope that something large or satisfying will happen, you will be disappointed. This is only made worse by the fact that the acting, dialogue and plot developments do little more than to waste away an hour of the movie before the real events unfold. There is no one major flaw in this movie, however no tweaking would have made this view-able. This movie is fundamentally built around a thin plot which leads to a 20 minute series of events and it makes the whole movie seem disjointed. The plot of the movie is that a group of friends are flying to a concert and the main character in the group of 5 (Lowndes) is the amateur pilot. She offers the best moments in the movie, but even those are scarce. Errors during flight causes the plane to climb higher than intended without the ability to descend. The main cling of fear appeared to be fear of flying and the claustrophobia associated with the small cabin and uncontrollable circumstances surrounding them. However, as evidenced by the movie case, this is a monster movie though you could barely tell because it has so little face time.I am notorious for being able to sit through garbage horror movies just to see the twist or developments at the end. That being said, I waited patiently through the poor dialogue and acting. At first it seems that everything could happen to you and there is no need to suspend your disbelief as with many supernatural horrors. However, the ending and subsequently revealed underlying plot of the movie are very supernatural and unfortunately are flat and unbelievable. It really made me regret sitting through the early goings to get a stupid ending.I would not recommend this movie to anyone as it really has no redeeming qualities. The only people who might find it interesting are pilots, but for every plane focused moment, there are 3 where the physics and mechanics are awful.
