I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
The acting in this movie is really good.
The majority of Ernst Lubitsch's films were silent. I wish this one had been, too, because they talk the story to death. As the old saying goes, "Too much talk and not enough action".And, to make it all the worse, all you really have here are two adult men with school-boy crushes on a young woman. It makes them look simply childish. Is there any reason to watch this film? Well, a few minor reasons. You get to see Gary Cooper speaking excellent French; it's his only really good dialog in the film. And, you get to see Mirima Hopkins in a role before she was typecast as a ditz. Edward Everett Horton has a rare role for the character actor where he was almost a romantic lead. But the problem with this film is that there are no admirable characters. Gary Cooper and Fredric March fight over the girl...and are not only unfaithful to their friendship, but literally unfaithful, as well. And Hopkin's character is pretty much a...well, what do you call a woman who marries one man, has a relationship with a second man, and also marries a third man...all the time playing games with the affections of each.I know I'm in a minority here, and I usually like both Cooper and March, but this film is about as low class as a film can get...at least back in 1933. I kept watching only because I thought there must be a redeeming value to the film; it never came.
Sure it's great. A fun movie with a grand script and funny refreshing silly dialog. Wonderful actors who are really having a good time and keep in mind that Edward Horton was a very well known swish but very much well liked and respected. Coop and Fred March and Miriam Hopkins most assuredly knew this at the time and that,to me, makes their vocal interplay all the more delightful. This flick is pre-code and keeping this in mind makes this movie even more interesting. Noel Coward was a great one also and a true fag. Miriam Hopkins is beautiful and when you put it all together you've got to love this one as I hope you all will and should.
Delightful even if more Ben Hecht than Noel Coward. The "menage a trois" has real brains, wit and magic. All due to the sensational chemistry between Gary Cooper, Fredric March, Miriam Hopkins and, of course, the unmistakable Lubitch touch. I was going to say that the film seems written today but the sad truth is there is nobody today that could write with this extraordinary elegance. Frediric March is masculine and volcanic, Gary Cooper feminine and irresistible and Miriam Hopkins, a sensational modern comedienne. As if this wasn't enough, Edward Everett Horton as Mr Wrong. The scene in which Hopkins compares Cooper and March to hats is one of my all time favorites.
I have recently married the most gorgeous man ever. I have corrupted him by encouraging him to drink absinthe and fall in love with jean Arthur and Norma shearer.one of his favourite seduction was the Robert Montgomery- Norma shearer "private lives" but tonight...but tonight we shared our very own discovery. the Lubitch masterpiece 'DESIGN FOR LIVING'I had never seen it, but I know that there is no coward only Hetch, but who cares?it is a wonderful film with wondrous performances and a classic in so many ways.Brian
