The Worst Film Ever
A lot of fun.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
The worst part of this movie is how talented the cast is in everything else they've appeared in. In this, they are smug, self righteous and annoying. The main problem is, that they are trying to act like "normal people" and some of the most talented actors, just can't pull that off. Philip Seymour Hoffman can definitely pull it off. Paul Giamatti can pull it off. These actors appear uncomfortable and really boring trying to be "regular" people in unusual situations, but even the situations are not that usual. The minority of people watching movies are actors or authors or whatever, so these situations don't ring true and as the most annoying of all, Maggie Gyllenhall comes across as giggly and stupid, something that is sad to watch, given how talented she is. Trust THIS woman, do NOT watch this movie!!!
this movie has got some bad reviews and I really can't see why. It was entertaining throughout with a witty script and some well thought out and well acted situations that everyone who's been in a relationship could relate to. Billy Crudup stole the show as the sarcastic and slightly bitter boyfriend of the maternal maggie gyllenhall while David duchovny showed us amongst other things how he could get off with Julianne Moore next to him but not touching him. This was a modern, realistic look at relationships today and had some good cameos from the likes of Ellen Barking and Garry Shandling. While this wasn't laugh-out loud stuff there were some very funny one-liners and scenes and I thought everything was wrapped up well in the end without reverting to schmaltz. All-in-all a good flick to see with the girlfriend/wife etc.
I watched this film for two reasons, one is Julianne Moore, my favorite American actress at present, another is Bill Crudup, I find him is quite cute and has some potential in his previous movies. The films is directed by Bart Freundlich, known as Moore's husband, and again hasn't proved his talent in this movie. As a romantic comedy, this film lacks the chemistry and humor it should have. Two couples in the movie, married and unmarried, they face quite a normal situation every couple will mostly have to deal with sooner or later, but the storyline kinda boring and inanimate, some plots related to Eva Mendes, Ellen Barkin, Bob Balaban and Justin Bartha could be more embedded. Sadly, the film just touch the surface and leave it pitifully unfinished. The chemistry between main characters are also just so-so, David & Julianne seems OK, because they have worked together before ("Evolution"), Bill & Maggie just do not fit for each other, it should be blame for the casting. But anyway, since the film is not high-quality type, actors or actresses cannot save the whole flick here. And one important thing, Moore should think about a different way to show her support of her husband's work, maybe not be involved into it and be the woman behind him, that's enough!
My wife and I both enjoyed this movie. If you're married or have been dating someone for a long time I think you'll appreciate it a lot more. The movie takes a refreshingly direct approach to telling the stories of its characters - none of them are perfect. There are a couple of moments that seem contrived or silly, but for the most part I was able to actually relate to the main characters.I appreciated the writing, and the way they told an honest story of real people, relationships, and sex, without using graphic language or nudity. I definitely recommend that you watch this movie with your spouse / significant other.
