Best movie ever!
A Masterpiece!
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
I'm Australian. I dated a French girl for 3 years. This movie is such an accurate representation of our relationship. Her exes or "friends" were always in the picture. The text messages are claimed to be "not that bad". "Messaging is not cheating" apparently. It gets to a stage where every single guy she knows, you automatically assume that she slept with him. And it's right 90% of the time. Just like Jack, I went through the situation of realizing that my girlfriend is a slut. So many lines in this film are direct quotes of hers. So many situations are exactly the same. Meeting the parents, "oh insults already". Insults in French were non-stop from her family. As I learnt French and could understand more and more I couldn't be around her family at all. Every issue raised about her family or her meeting up with "friends" (exes) was met with anger. All blame was put on me of course. In the end I concluded that despite what she says, she does not believe in monogamous relationships. It's safe to say that I'm not a fan of the French. I find them immoral.
What had the potential of being a great film with lots of opportunity of being another "The Out of Towners" with Jack Lemon and Sandy Dennis turned out to be a drawn out and tedious film of self indulgence by the director and author, Julie Delpy. The very few laughs or humorous moments were few and far between and the characters were extremely shallow and pathetic. This was watched with a friend who had the same impressions and we both found it to be typical of many French films without much substance and little to say. It was also fairly crude and crass for the sake of just making an impact and added little to whatever points were trying to be made. This was one long, tedious and drawn out film that had little to offer the viewer in terms of comedy and not much to redeem itself in its ending.
What can I tell about Julie Delpy? After watching Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), both this year in the same day, I took some time looking for other movies she's in, and this woman rocks. This movie is wonderful in all senses. If you're expecting something like Before Sunset or Sunrise, you're right. If you think that it will be the same thing, you're wrong. If you think that you will spend 96 minutes just hearing dialogs, you're right. If you think you'll get bored, you're wrong. If you think this is a love story, you're right. If you think that it's a ordinary one, you're wrong.Even being a romantic comedy, it surprises you all the time becoming a terrific romantic comedy. I recommend for those ones that love this kind of genre but is tired to always watch the same things. The ironic dialogs are great from the beginning to the end, there are moments truly hilarious and intelligent without being cliché.Julie Delpy directed, wrote, edited, produced, composed the original score and also is the main actress. This woman is brilliant, I'm fascinated by her and each new work she's in.
A very good, intellectually and romantically stimulating and wonderful film directed and written by Julie Delpy, who also plays the main character, Marion, to Adam Goldberg's Jack; the two are a couple who spend two days in Marion's hometown Paris, before heading to their home in New York. While there, Jack finds himself strangely surrounded by Marion's exes, a language he doesn't understand and several dramatic and very comedic relationships. Marion evolves and revolves throughout the film. All in all, very comedic, very human (i.e. non-Hollywoodesque) and sympathetic. Straightforward acting, a beautiful script and many laughs makes this a winner.
