Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
If you don´t like this movie the first time you watch it, give it another try: it gets better.
When this movie first came out on VHS - remember those? - 29 years ago, I rented it often. I'm not sure why anymore. But what I am sure of, having watched it again tonight, is that this is, indeed, a flawless movie. It is not just the simple but wonderful story, that truly good food and drink, consumed in good company, are one of the transcendent pleasures of life. You have only to watch the general in the movie to see that.It is also a paean to the pleasure of doing what you do very well to your very best, even when no one can truly appreciate it. As Babette says at the end of the movie, an artist takes joy in creating something wonderful.Every little detail of this movie is worked out perfectly. It could easily have been overdone and exaggerated; it never is. It is all perfectly balanced, perfectly tempered. It is, like Babette's feast, a work of art brought off to perfection. Some quiet night when you have no distractions, turn off your cellphone and treat yourself to this feast. You won't gain an ounce, but you will leave the movie totally satisfied.
Babette's Feast is considered among the top movies of all time.It moves in it's own time, which may frustrate those who expect instant gratification. It is also not in English, so English speakers will have to read the subtitles. What it is, is just about the perfect film. It is best described as a touching comedy, with some serious, dramatic elements, none of which take over the film and attempt to overwhelm the viewer, but are presented matter-of-factly. By the end, you will have laughed more than you remember, and you may very well have shed tears. But tears are not due to sadness. Tears come from humor and joy. This is an understated film that touches your soul while making you laugh.
This may be one of my top ten films; at least it's close. I think the beauty of it is that the setup is so low key; the events so inconsequential. Yet those events leading to the final feast are so incredibly well introduced and the characters so incredibly interesting. It also gives us that theme of redemption. This is a chance for a person who has gone through life unnoticed to push her gifts to the maximum and have that one great moment. We get to watch as things unfold. We get to absorb the history that leads to this moment. Of course, without wonderful performances it wouldn't work. When it's over, we feel fulfilled. The world isn't much different than when we entered; but then we all are here for a short time. The mark of a good movie for me is that I occasionally think back on scenes and events long after seeing the film. This is one of them. It's more than worth every moment.
