A different way of telling a story
Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Blistering performances.
"Stakeout" with Richard Dreyfuss was one of the best comedies of the 80's. Dreyfuss has been cast very successfully as a leading man, several times, even though he is only about 5'6" and not extremely handsome. However, he has loads of charisma, and the roles he's chosen give him a chance to showcase it. Whole cast for this movie is fantastic, you can really feel that romance burning with Richard Dreyfuss and Madeleine Stowe, they are really perfect in their roles. Maybe the best couple in the movie history, considering that they are not really compatible she is way younger and taller than Dreyfuss character, but his charisma and humor got Madeleine where he wanted.. Stowe is so beautiful, you almost can't take your eyes off her. And the sensual way she was going after Dreyfuss was completely believable, and on fire! It was the most perfect love scene ever! Also, plot is kinda standard nothing new here, a good police/buddy action flick, with a lot of chasing, gunning and again romance at the end of the movie. Other cast are really good too, i can say that Emilio Estevez played his part really cool and maybe one of his best performances i saw, including also Aidan Quinn as a villain. The best part of this movie is the soundtrack, it is really a great compilation of hit songs from 80's including some of the most popular bands of that time such as: Gloria Estefan, The Pointer Sisters, Steve Winwood, Mr. Mister and The Ward Brothers. Just perfect songs, Higher Love is my all time favorite and it fitted perfect on romantic scenes from the movie. All in all, this is a good movie. It also has some really classic moments--the chase in the fish factory, the wood chipper outside the window, and a number of others. It is slightly predictable in a few spots, but overall it delivers.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.
"Buddy Cop" movies were all the rage in the 80s, and 'Stakeout' is filled to bursting with the genre's clichés. But the fresh titular premise and charming performances by, and great chemistry between, stars Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez help to lift it above the fay and make it feel fresh. Oh, and then there's Madeline Stowe. My God, Madeline Stowe. She is just... wow. But, she also gives a really nice performance here, and she and Dreyfuss make for a strangely good screen couple.'Stakeout' is a breezy, fun and subtly clever action/comedy (emphasis on the "comedy"). It's not groundbreaking, but it is solid entertainment for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
In an exciting opening, psycho scary-looking Aidan Quinn (as Richard "Stick" Montgomery) escapes from prison, with help from his model-perfect cousin Ian Tracey (as Caylor Reese). It's an incredibly lucky break - but so effectively done, you leave your brain at the door and enjoy the movie. The case is super-hot, so the FBI calls in Seattle, Washington's finest. Feds figure Mr. Quinn will try to see ex-girlfriend Madeleine Stowe (as Maria McGuire), so they assign detective Richard Dreyfuss (as Chris Lecce) and his young partner Emilio Estevez (as Bill Reimers) to "Stakeout" her home...Watching Ms. McGuire from across the street turns out to have fringe benefits; she's an arousing woman. In order to "tap" her calls, Mr. Dreyfuss poses as a telephone repair man. The two are mutually attracted...Everything works well to make this am entertaining film. Director John Badham puts James Kouf's story together expertly. Dreyfuss bounces off of everyone and everything well; his 1987 "box office" standing took an immediate rise. Action sequences are tightly edited and the cast carries us through. One jarring note in the otherwise fun thrill-ride is the unnecessarily brutal opening; specifically, Quinn's brutality sets an unfunny tone which could have been better paced if his tendency to murder began with his service station heist. We know he's bad. The stunt workers should have received bonus checks.******** Stakeout (8/5/87) John Badham ~ Richard Dreyfuss, Emilio Estevez, Aidan Quinn, Madeleine Stowe
For a film which reached number 1 at the US box office and earned enough movie for the studio to green-light a sequel, Stakeout has strangely enough become a forgotten 80s gem.The story is simple, officers Lecce (Richard Dreyfuss) and and Reimers (Emilio Estevez) are assigned to a stakeout of the house of waitress Maguire (Madeleine Stowe), hoping that her fugitive ex-boyfriend (Aidan Quinn) will return to her house. Things soon take a bizarre twist, as Lecce, posing as a telephone repairman, and Maguire start to fall in love.Although the film offers no originality and is riddled with clichés, it is very entertaining. Although it runs for nearly two hours, it thankfully doesn't feel that long and the story keeps you interested all the way. Richard Dreyfus and Emilio Estevez are quality comedians, somewhat surprisingly in my opinion. Their jokes and banter make the comedy part of this film work well. The thriller elements are good too, Aidan Quinn does a good job making his character look like a real bad-ass, and the film's action sequences are really solid pre-cgi-stuff. I was especially impressed by the car chase, which looks really good.Overall, this is pure solid 80s entertainment and I think this film deserves to be remembered and watched. I think it is equally good as many other 80s action classics like "48 hours" for example. Recommended!
