If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
This film gets so many things right. Seems like the writer knows exactly what ails the Muslim society and this movie captures that brilliantly. The modern but Islamist wife, the pious and regressive but non-violent Islamic preacher, the white convert who is more hardcore in his jihad than the others, the run-of-the-mill kebab shop worker who supports jihad, the happy-go-lucky and unsuspecting co-worker from the security agency, the freely mingling drug-addicted white girl. If this isn't piercing satire, I don't know what is. One of the best movies I have ever seen. Also contains some brilliant dialogues like, "Bro, I think I might be confused but I am not sure."
First, to all the people who gave this anything less than 5 stars: You haven't the slightest idea about satire, comedy or anything for that matter. This movie is funny, because it's only bordering on the authentic. Stupidity has no limits, no boundaries. This is a fact no matter how much anyone might try to dispute or disapprove. Barry & Waj (two of the boys) is proof of that. I'm certain that there's a ton of Barrys and Wajs out there somewhere. I actually believe that there's a Barry everywhere in one way or another. The fact that this film turns dark towards the end is only logical. It's to be expected. How else can one let this movie end? Stupidity combined with violent intent always ends badly or tragically. I'm especially fond of the Heimlich near the end there. The Cumberbatch cameo as the perplexed negotiator also was a nice surprise. This movie's full of interestingly bad/dumb decisions and statements. I watched it just once and I'm already repeating or quoting some of them. As far as Chris Morris goes, I'm not familiar with his work, apart from his role in The IT crowd, but just for having the balls to make this 6 years ago, he should be commended. 7.4/10
Zero Stars. This film is awful. It relies on characters' ineptitude for humor just like The Graduate. I hated that film. I hate this one too. Unfunny, long, boring, with weird characters and zero character development. Bad Camera work. Not to mention, but that was some horrible accent they talked with. Do all the British immigrants talk like that? But a couple of good dialogs.Arrgghhh Wasted my time watching this.
I got dragged to the cinema to watch this crock and boy was I not happy with it. Most of my friends were persistent in liking it but that is probably more from stubbornness than to give ground to my view in that this was some grotesque trash.Anyways I've just got home and caught the end of this trash on channel 4 before the football started and aside from some amendments to the TV product (advertising purposes), I'm still revulsed by this nasty fair. What the hell is so funny about 4 protagonists who, through the usual disillusioned tripe, want to execute innocent people? How in God's name is that funny? Oh, I know, we'll take the edge off by making sure they're morons. Does it work? Does is frank. The 4 protagonists are frightening, irrespective of their 'hilarious' incompetence.Firstly, we have Barry, a hate-filled idiot, convert, who is potentially the most horrid of the lot, who gets blown up whilst choking. Secondly, the comically lovely chap Faisal, who accidentally and 'hilariously' blows himself up. Thirdly we have Waj, who is the personification of 'who is more the fool? The fool or the fool that follows him', who blows himself up whilst asking for further instruction. Finally, we have the 'brains', Omar. What's so funny about him you ask? Absolutely nothing. The only proposed funny entry in his character is that he doesn't know how to fire the first stinger launcher that has been put in his hands. If you thought that was funny and rounded his character off then I don't feel sorry for you in the slightest and I would suggest you punch yourself in the face with a 5 iron at every opportunity, it won't make much of a difference.Omar's character is the most dangerous because this is how 'terrorists' irl work. They merge. There is nothing remotely funny about this. His wife works in a hospital and acts as a contact for him and is a fully paid up member of the psycho-squad. Too close to home? Damn right it is.I always find myself wanting to write reams, to be more comprehensive in my critique but I'm not getting paid for it so I'll leave that up to the ones that do. In short this is just not funny. Not that I'm saying you can't make this dangerous material funny but it would take far more skill than what's been illustrated here, by a long way.The only funny-ish part of the film was the marksman scene, when they get mixed up on whether or not to shoot something like a wookie or a honey-monster (something like that) but it was so out of place in the overall context of the film that it was like farting in a funeral. As for the actors, well, they did was asked, I guess. I only know of Kayvan Novak, who was brilliant, in the excellent, Sirens but I wouldn't be surprised if this tasteless trash will detract from their workability.Bad, bad, horrible.
