It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
I just don't get why it has such low rating. I found this movie to be hilarious! But I guess a lot of people don't get it, because is a particular type of humor. If you like the humor of movies like "Behaving badly" then you will surely love this one. On the acting side, I think Aubrey is super funny and along with the other actors manage to make the movie very exaggerated which is (on purpose) part of it's greatness. And even though most of the situations are absurd, at the end of the day it has a very realistic approach to the life of teenagers and people in general. Oh, and is good to see the women's perspective on sex and relations for a change. So, if you like absurd and over the top comedies, but with realistic approach, you'll enjoy this as much as I did.
I wanted to like this movie, but it was so boring. The title sequence was great and I thought that this might be a raunchier version of Adventureland, but like I said it was just boring. The dialog was flat, the acting was uninspired, and the story was predictable. This movie wanted to be Fast Times or Dazed and Confused, but it just came off as pretentious. It just seemed like this movie was trying way too hard to be edgy. There were a couple of laughs, but I ended up just wanting the movie to be over quickly. Truth be told, it took me two tries to finish it because it just didn't hold my attention.I don't have much to say about this movie except that once the shock factor wears off, it's just a below average teen sex farce. This was a waste of lots of talented actors. My advice, skip it!
I could never get all these movie that have heavy talking about sex, like sperm swallowing etc. and they never showing a female nipple. So in this movie too, you get the 99% of the dialogs being about handjobs, and blowjobs and backdoors and pussy licking etc. and you can hear the sound, see the moves, the awkward positions, you even see the glitchy semen in the hand of the girl or in her mouth BUT there is absolutely no nudity. It's very very pretentious...if you ask me. A bad choice that makes an uneven film. Here you have a female screenwriter/director who (not surprisingly) didn't do anything after this crap, and who she employed her husband (and father of 3 Bill Hader) as the star. The whole film is very diminishing about women and treats her with a manner, even worst than whores. All of the "sex" scenes are disturbing and trying to force some laughs from the awkwardness of showing some (parent, friend, nephew, coworker) walking right during the act, wherever the place and whenever the time. There is also no meaning in this. No moral about friendship, or feelings, or parenthood, or marriage, or education or ...nothing.Overall: An empty shell of a movie. If you want tips like "Let your one-night stand lover drink pineapple juice so his sperm will taste sweet when you swallow it" than this is the movie for you. Otherwise...
It's 1993 in Boise, Idaho. Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza) has just graduated from high school as the straight laced valedictorian and a virgin. She has a loose older sister Amber (Rachel Bilson), frank mother (Connie Britton) and an embarrassed father (Clark Gregg). Cameron (Johnny Simmons) is her nerdy friend who is in love with her. Fiona (Alia Shawkat) and Wendy (Sarah Steele) are her slutty best friends. She gets convinced by her sister that she needs to lose her virginity before going to college. She wants to lose it to hot guy Rusty Waters (Scott Porter). So she makes a sexual to-do list. She's working at the pool managed by Willy (Bill Hader) for the summer where Rusty, Derrick (Donald Glover) and Cameron are working. This is a fine inappropriate coming of age movie from writer/director Maggie Carey. My biggest problem is actually Aubrey Plaza. She's too old to play a teenager. She also plays very sarcastic which takes away from the character. I think either Alia Shawkat or Sarah Steele would be better fit. They have a more innocent persona which would work much better for the character. Aubrey's whole act is low energy sarcasm. It's a better fit for a sarcastic bitter friend with a heart like 'Parks and Recreation'.
