Wonderful Movie
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
Want to taste some strawberry soup? You are not a gourmet like me? Not even a gourmet of movies? Of the best movies? Believe you me, this one it's probably the best comedy of all time. Peter Sellers in an absolutely irresistible role, for which he coached in "The Road to Hong Kong"(1962), directed by Norman Panama, where he performs a demented Indian Neurologist. You will see many other adorable actors in "The Party": Claudine Longet, Steve Franken, J Edward McKinley, etc. Great music by the great Henry Mancini. Blake Edwards (1922-2010) was a great film director and comedy specialist, the Pink Panther series with the huge Peter Sellers, "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and so on. Now, I recommend you to watch The Rolling Stones' official promo video for "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (But I Like It)"(1974), directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg. The circus tent that fills with bubbles is certainly inspired by the end of "The Party". And another recommendation, if you watch "Bean" (1997), with Rowan Atkinson and directed by Mel Smith, you will find that the idea with the painting is inspired by the same "The Party" (Peter Sellers scene in the bathroom after he succeeds finally to pee...). I would give it more than 10 stars because it is really a movie that you can see many many times, all your life. I forgot how many times I saw it, five times for certain, at least.
Timing is everything in comedy, and thus thrilling classic is probably the most continuously hysterical film that I have seen in years. This is one of those films where you must watch without distraction and without turning away for any reason. Those who dismiss comedy as not an art form should open up to films like this where every moment is staged to be precisely perfect down to the second. This really has no major plot, just the goings on at a lavish Hollywood party where Sellers, as an accident prone Indian actor, shows up stag and unknowingly turns the evening into a series of accidents, aided by a drunken server, a few ditsy starlets, and just plain bad timing. While there are a few familiar faces involved (Marge Champion as the hostess and Gavin MacLeod with a toupee as a rather nasty guest), the supporting cast is mainly unknown actors who are directed to not react to the things going on, giving the assumption that they were simply to ignore everything going on around them, exposing pretentious behavior from the audacious guests. The genius of Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards surpassed the two Pink Panther films with this where every inconceivable accident happens to him. I don't find anything offensive in Sellers' portrayal of a Hindu man; in fact he's quite lovable in his flaws, gentility and sincerity. So while it may indeed be a mad, mad, mad, mad party, there's nothing maddening for the audience except perhaps the fact that it will take several viewings to capture everything going on.
I must have seen it 100 times and know this movie line by line. However, it was the first time for my kids and they enjoyed a lot. This is very difficult these days when people have the attention span of a mouse... Steve Franken ( aka the drunken butler ) steals the show, he's something else... It is quite unbelievable that Peter Sellers was pretty hard to live and work with to see that Peter Sellers was a comedic genius. Mind you I never enjoyed The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu (1980) or Casino Royale (1967), however I remember where I was when learned of his death. I think his best role I think is Chance the gardener in Being There. You know when you still walk around the house saying: Burdie num, num or Kato my little yellow friend , 40 years on, it means something. My kids think I'm crazy , probably ! lol
You all ate birdie num num. Nobody noticed what is written on the proverbial elephant in the room forehead: "The World is Flat!" Didn't see that? You didn't get it! Also says, "chicken little was right," "Socrates eats Hemlock," and "Go naked." Blake Edward's birth name: William Blake, famous poet who wrote poem about flat earth. Theme modeled after William Blake's "Island in the Moon." Bakshi's orange jumpsuit, same worn by astronauts. Bakshi says speak with a forked tongue twice. NASA's logo: red forked snakes tongue. Kelso means "High Level Sheep." Hostess name: Alice. Boss name: Fred, an acronym for F@#ing ridiculous economic disaster, nickname for Lockheed 6-5 Galaxy first flown 1968, same year movie released. Bakshi puts his hand in "Operation Fishbowl" Something smells fishy! None of you get it! Bake Edwards was extremely brilliant, everything in the movie means something. Name on guest list Bernard Stein. Dig deeper, join the real party!
