Simply A Masterpiece
Good concept, poorly executed.
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
This movie is a breath of fresh air. The characters of Kay and Arnold remind me of a real people. I know these types of people. In a relationship, you have to work at it. Anyone who has been through couples therapy knows those scenes in this film are realistic. Tommy Lee Jones is outstanding as a man whose whole world is his wife but he takes her for granted. He slowly shows that he is willing to open up despite not being comfortable doing so. Steve Carrell should get credit for his work in this too for not being tempted to try and change his character to a comedic relief role. They need to make more movies like these.
for its deep realism. for the fascinating artistic duel between two great actors. for Steve Carell who represents a real revelation for his admirable performance. it is a film who impress for a great script, for humor, for grow up of old feelings, for fears, vulnerabilities, desires and the fight against yourself. and, more important, for the trip in an aspect of middle age couple who has the admirable virtue to be example of wise equilibrium. a film about a marriage and its new beginning. simple, direct, convincing, refreshing. a honest portrait about a delicate theme. and a great work because it is not easy to imagine better interpreters as Kay and Arnold. sure, a good film. maybe great. for its delicate exploration of an age and the feelings who define it.see it ! not for admire the acting. but for understand rules of a too serious game.
First off, Hope Springs is not the great film it could have been or was suggested by the trailers so I was a bit disappointed by that. That being that, this was still a pretty good movie that I'm sure is relatable to older married couples as this film delves pretty deep into mature themes such as sex life entering old age. Me being a young guy, I thought I would be turned off but actually it didn't do that so much. There are several funny scenes here, but I would label this film more of a drama than a comedy because that's what it is.David Frankel, who directed the magnificent "Devil Wears Prada," is back at it again here in Hope Springs. After thirty years of marriage, Kay and Arnold begin to realize their marriage has been drifting apart. Kay, much to Arnold's displeasure, contacts a well-known sex therapist to help them renew the strength in their marriage. This movie is all about the showdown between two of the greatest actors of anyone's generation: Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. Honestly, I did not dig Streep's performance as I thought I would. She's not awful, but not great either. Jones is just utterly amazing. No matter what genre he does, he goes above and beyond and once again shows that here. Steve Carell does a pretty good job in his dramatic role, though I thought he would be somewhat funnier.Overall, this is just a good film, but nothing special. It may be a good date night movie or a film older couples will like to watch. Personally, I liked it but to a certain degree. My high score only comes from Tommy Lee Jones who I just plain love as an actor. I rate this film 8/10.
My wife and I are in the middle of watching this wretched film. Man, I can't take any more. Please.... make.... it.... stop....Now, to the actual review. It's bad, bad, really, really bad. In reality, that doesn't even begin to describe it. It's beyond really, really bad---way beyond. It's so bad that I can't even find a word for how bad it is. Ghastly? No, that's not nearly strong enough. Vile? No, it's worse than that. Truly painful to watch (and I watch Svengoolie all the time). I'm definitely going to have nightmares. Finally, I'm willing to wager that at least 90% of the positive reviews are from married women over the age of 50, where the roles are exactly the opposite of those in the movie. That is, the woman is the one who is not keen on sex, not the husband.
