i must have seen a different film!!
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
This one's a little overrated; I wouldn't call it "solid". While the action scenes are clever and certainly entertaining, they're also unrealistic, like when Clive Owen's sitting by the fireplace and raises the bullets between his fingers up to shoot Paul Giamatti, he'd burn the back of his hand. That stunt would be almost impossible to pull off because if the butt of the bullets is heating up enough for them to fire, the back of his hand would be feeling the same and he wouldn't be able to take it. His cute little punch line that Paul's gotten it right that he's dead doesn't even hold true because it didn't kill him.
Shoot em Up is exactly what the title says it is: a no-holds barrier fun action movie that is guaranteed to make even the action movie buff happy! After a woman dies, a man named Smith makes it his mission to protect her kid 'Oliver'. He teams up with a prostitute making this a wonderfully action action film! And by action i DO mean action! Oh yes this really shows it! I think they used every handgun imaginable for the film lol! This movie is non-stop action for ninety minutes. Do yourself a huge favor and see this movie! You won't regret it! The actor Paul Giamatti who portrays Hertz is excellent as the guy you wanna dislike just cause he doesn't care and how Smith will do anything to protect Oliver. Monica Bellucci as Donna Quintano was great too as Smith's lover in the film. This is a movie you don't want to miss! I give Shoot 'Em Up a 7/10
This film has an incredibly stupid story, it's like something a 12 year old would write when attempting to create an action film. The story is simplistic, the characters make no sense, the action scenes are completely over the top and the lines are as cheesy as a swiss fondue. This is by no means a good film. But if you want to be entertained by nonstop funny action, this is the place to go. If you're looking for a stupid action film, this is one of the best. It doesn't even try to be anything else, and I like that.Get this film, and save it for a night when you just want to be entertained.
Shoot 'Em Up delivers on what is sets out to be, a high octane action thrill ride, and it is exactly that. Simply by reading the plot synopsis or viewing trailers, one can see exactly how this film would turn out. Right from the very scene where we see a mysterious lady running while being chased by a criminal, with Smith (Clive Owen) sitting by the bus stop bench, we can already sense the action that this film will bring.Bringing a lot of great action sequences including a running gag with Smith using carrots to project his guns, and car chases and constant shooting scenes. The characters work here, and the film doesn't take itself as serious which is why it is entertaining. From the gimmicky over the top villain (Paul Giamatti), to the calm and collected lead (Clive Owen), to the lead female sidekick (Monica Bellucci). There is some clever humor coming from both Giamatti and Owen, including their final showdown towards the end where they go back and forth with one another. What I also enjoyed about Shoot 'Em Up is the runtime. In many action films, they tend to drag on quite a bit to include unnecessary scenes, but in Shoot 'Em Up the film is relatively short and it does not drag on. Although the film has a very minimal plot, it is thick on action. Protecting the newborn baby was a great twist.Memorable scenes would include: Smith shooting a dozen of men while going in a downward spiral of stairs (around 33:30), Smith killing another villain while injecting a carrot through his eyes (39:38), Smith being chased upon by several men then him landing in their van eventually killing 10+ of them (58:50). Recommend Shoot 'Em Up for those who enjoy high constant brainless action films.
