Overwhelmed by her son's attentions, 70-year-old Sundari plans to escape to an unknown destination with her granddaughter, Niveditha, and daughter-in-law, Kaveri. Niveditha, a 24-year-old cricketer, wants to put some distance between herself and her boyfriend after they agree to take some time off. And Kaveri, who is “just a mother”, has had enough of serving her family without being appreciated.

The trio spend the night at a disreputable motel. Kaveri makes friends with someone unexpected. Rajaratnam suddenly falls ill and jeopardizes the trip.

After Sundari ruins her son's endeavor, the women arrive at a cultural festival. Nivi meets someone interesting. A ghost from the past visits Kaveri. The trio must solve an unexpected problem.

The trio's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. The three take refuge in a small lost town where Kaveri meets her counterpart. Sundari searches for an address. Nivi begins to understand her mother.

At Sundari's request, the women begin a tour of different temples, where they come across a couple of foreigners. Nivi is surprised to find Vikram at a local market, and he invites the three of them to go camping with her friends. Kaveri visits a gharana with Vikram. Sundari finally finds out the address he is looking for.

A major disagreement creates tension between the women. As Julia and Robert marry, they retrace the paths of the past.

Nivi and Kaveri regret their behavior as they wait to hear from the doctor. Kaveri calls Rajaratnam after what seems like a lifetime. Nivi understands that she doesn't know anything about her parents.

The family is reunited. But, as the women begin to celebrate their new and improved lives, someone knocks on the door.
