The Basement
At the age of 8, Darrell overheard the details of his grandfathers murder, while hiding in the basement kitchen. The murder of James Fusaro had gangland signs, the newspapers shouted. As the news continued and rumors spread, the humiliation, shame, and fear of more violent attacks by Mafia, silenced the Fusaros. This silence was not without consequences; it became malignant and destroyed the family. By the time Darrell was 18, his close-knit Italian-American family, who celebrated so many good times together in their grandparents basement kitchen, was no more. In the documentary, The Basement, we witness this regular guy do extraordinary things through his acceptance, generosity and sense of humor.

Rethinking Cancer
Rethinking Cancer is an educational documentary film that provides a rare look into the psychological and therapeutic journeys of five men and women who used biological alternative cancer therapies to overcome serious illness. Their stories represent successes that mainstream medicine and the public ought to know about. Four of the featured subjects had been diagnosed with cancer; two of these patients were considered terminal cases. The fifth patient had a severe case of Lyme disease. All five have outlived their diseases, between 15 and nearly 40 years, thus far.

Thambividaiyan', the film which has been courting controversy ever since it was launched early this year, is releasing this week. The story revolves around the difficulties and tough times faced by the farmers of Cauvery Delta in and around the Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. Some romance too has been sprinkled in good measure to make the film more interesting. To star in the film in the lead role, Tamilvanan approached in vain all heroes, right from When the film was viewed by the screening committee of the Censor Board, it objected to 'certain violent sequences' depicting the farmers' turmoil in a rather forceful manner. When the Board advised the producer to cut down some 'sequences', the latter refused to do so, prompting the Board to promptly ban the movie altogether.

The Farm
Mickey and Juliet, a young couple on the run from a vicious gang of drug dealers arrive at a deserted farm in the countryside near Cork, aiming to flee the country by ferry the following day. This documentary interviews Asian men, who explain why they are so strongly attracted to virgins. Many Asian men believe that "lying with" a virgin will bring them health and luck. The men know that virginity can be faked; there is therefore a huge demand for younger and younger girls, so that clients can be certain of their virginity. Once her virginity has been taken, she is sold on to brothels, in different parts of Cambodia or over the border in Thailand. In the brothel, she is at high risk of disease and if she manages to escape, faces imprisonment in Thailand or scorn and rejection back home. We hear the stories of those whose lives have been ruined by the virginity trade, and speak to politicians, the police and representatives from NGOs.
