Is the US running out of Social Security?
Is the US running out of Social Security?
" There’s no denying that Americans rely heavily on Social Security benefits. Estimates from the Social Security Administration found that 97% of adults over the age of 60 are either collecting or will start collecting Social Security. As of February 2023, about one in every five residents in the US collected benefits from these funds. For such a widely used program, it’s a bit surprising that people in the US know so little about how it works. To be fair, most of the news around this program over the past decade has been about how it’s doomed in one way or another. Millennials and younger may see the money being taxed from their paychecks and believe they’ll probably never see it again, but is the program really destined to fail? And what do we stand to lose if it does?"

From the Notebook of...
From the Notebook of...
"From the Notebook of..." was shot in Florence and takes as its point of departure Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks and Paul Valéry's essay on da Vinci's process. These two elements suggest an implicit comparison between the treatment of space in Renaissance art and the moving image. The film marks a critical development in the artist's work in that he repeatedly employs a series of rapid pans and upward tilts along the city's buildings or facades, often integrating glimpses of his own face. As Beavers notes in his writing on the film, the camera movements are tied to the filmmakers' presence and suggests his investigative gaze.

Following more than three years of exploratory research, photography, and writing about the singular view from his Brooklyn studio, Groeneboer took up a daily practice over the subsequent two and a half years of filming the panorama through his window. This process entailed a durational commitment to witnessing the presence of architectures and systems that are often hidden from everyday life. The resulting film is a visual meditation that follows the cyclical rhythms of weather and industry to offer a portrait of New York City in relation to the forces that shape it, including late-stage capitalism and environmental crises.
