You won't be disappointed!
It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.
Absolutely the worst movie.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Following the death of their daughter, a couple move to a small rural Irish village, where they discover that the locals have a ritual which can bring back the dead for three bonus days. However, the dead person has to have been dead for less than a year, and their daughter misses out by a month or so. Still, no need to own up to that, despite the warning of consequences...This horror film is nicely atmospheric and well acted by a small but respectable cast. In fact, the only thing wrong with it is that it is completely derivative, being ripped off almost entirely from Stephen King's Pet Semetary even to the occupation of the father (vet) and twist ending. Still, throw in a smattering of Wicker Man...
Well there is always the case that I always have high expectations whenever I hear of a British/Irish horror film because I often think of a "Woman in black" or "Don't Look now". Often I have been disappointed LOL. So here comes another in the line of slow burn British horrors. Well this is not as slow burn as I thought, to be honest. Things are moving faster than I would have liked most of the time. It has influences from many movies - obviously Don't Look now, Pet sematary, Deathdream and the obvious Monkey's Paw story. But it does not have the power of these movies at all. In fact towards the end, some scenes were quite reminiscent of Deathdream, for example. But while Deathdream moved me to tears, I am not sure of this movie had any impact on me at all. For such a sad story, the impact is quite less. The performances are good but maybe there are problems with the pacing and the script. The things that happen are so clichéd and everything's been done before in much better ways. Even as a horror movie, it doesn't work perfectly. Not even a couple of jump scares which could provide some cheap thrills. At no point is this adorable little girl ever threatening. Last one is a shallow complaint. But the Arthur character was a little distracting because I remember as that character in the movie Enchanted. I just couldn't take him seriously. But that's not a serious complaint. As a standalone film(not considering the horror elements), it is actually not so bad. But it is just that I was reminded of better films because there is not much originality in the story or style.
Interesting ideas are not enough to make this a truly fantastic horror. It's too concerned with being a horror, than exploring its themes. Bringing loved ones back from the dead is great, we see many people enjoying a peaceful 3days. Yet this girl has to go mental, just because the film wants to scare. If it's a film about closure and moving on, then why does it jump about so much at the end? Seeing Spall play with an abacus after some fairly pointless questions just made the film seem so shallow in mythology. AT least set out some ground rules. The editing also betrays the budget. With nothing ever really shown, just a shot of a car, a dogs teeth, shocked reactions, dog on floor. Editing can disguise a budget, but the pale photography makes it more home-movie than horror movie. I'd heard great things, that equated this to a modern day Don't Look Now/Wicker-Man. All I really got was a fairly enjoyable movie with some good ideas, but a reluctance to avoid the obvious.
Plot: A couple grieving for the death of their nine-year old daughter in the jaws of a psychotic dog travel to the small town of Wake Wood where they find out a pagan ritual will give them three more days with their daughter. The deal is struck with the village leader, but what will the couple do when their daughter has to return to being dead? This was a okay hammer movie, (we have seen this done a few times,(As there a lot of evil kid movies out there!)This movie did remind me a lot Pet Sematary, I didn't find this movie scary however I did have some good creepy scenes. The start of movie was really nasty and gory (I love dogs, seem that scene was really hard to watch, as it dose happen in really life!)The movie did get tad boring for a bit, I was clad it was a short movie and the ending was bit odd but I don't think I understood it!Acting from everyone was really good.5 out of 10 from me.
