I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
As Good As It Gets
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
I never expected to spot Corin Nemec's name in the opening credits when I first watched this (that's just me being too dim to look on both sides of the DVD cover). When I saw his name, I became excited! I first saw him as John Hammond in Dragon Wasps (one of the first few B-Movies I watched which became my favourite) and I saw him again in Robocroc and Lake Placid vs Anaconda. After watching Dragon Wasps numerous times, Nemec became my favourite. His role in this film however made me love him even more!! His character, Jimmy, starts out as a flamboyant idiot who is disliked by most people. He appears as likable and unlikeable at the same time (depending on the person he is associated with). After witnessing his first Sand Shark attack alongside others, he eventually becomes incredibly goofy (even when slightly drunk) whilst still trying to play as the idiot.Every time he opened his mouth to speak or scream and showed his body language and facial expressions, it put a big cheesy grin on my face.I don't care if Nemec's acting is either good, bad, halfway decent, hammy or cheesy (or all of the above), I still love what he can do with these types of B-Movies.In fact, after watching this movie, I started having hopes that this guy should give it a go at voice acting. I believe he has the perfect voice and personality for it!!Good one, Corky!! You've made me proud!!
I love these stupid movies, especially the ones that go out of their way to make no sense. They don't take themselves seriously in the least, they know exactly what you expect when you watch one. Its all corny one-liners, wacky characters, babes, and of course campy monster-violence. The rest of this review should just be that sentence over and over: corny one-liners, wacky characters, babes and campy monster-violence- that's it! I wanted to review this one because it was particularly good, and I've seen my fair share. I'll be reviewing more soon, but since this one I've seen some terrible SyFy originals (Mongolian Death-Worm, unfortunately, Ba'al the Storm God, list goes on) but this one rocked. Spend two hours in HILARIOUS nonsense land, and brace yourself for the most OBVIOUS, IDIOTIC climax you've ever seen. SAND SHARKS!(so sand sharks DO become land sharks!)
Damn. I remember when the Scifi channel was a great channel. Battlestar Galactica. Caprica. Classic sf movies. Twilight zone (ok, they still show that). then NBC took over and the channel went down hill, linking up with those losers at The Asylum, where they should all be committed, and showing absolute garbage like this. This crap makes stuff by Shyamalan look good. I'm not even kidding here. Bad acting. Bad SFX, bad story. Bad everything. And then some idiot will say, "Oh it's a homage to the great B's of the past." Ha. These aren't even as good as the trailers of B's of the past. They should all go to Corman school and learn how to do things on a budget. I'm swearing off the formerly known as the scifi channel forever.
As a horror, this film is rated 1/10...and I'm the biggest wimp ever, Hot Fuzz gave me nightmares (go figure). If you choose to view this film as a comedy however, it's great! Me and my friends sat through this laughing our heads off at the terrible CGI, (at one point I'm sure somebody was wiggling a cardboard triangle along the bottom of the screen), and the cheesy lines said with such a serious manner are quite frankly hysterical. "She's thinking....out of the sandbox! >8O" Deary me. It's entertaining at least, major weakness though is the inability to feel any connection to any of the characters, they're all very stereotypical characters, the clever one, the courageous police, the nob-head, etc. Overall, it's funnier when watching in a group, good option for a chill-out movie night with mates!
