Save your money for something good and enjoyable
One of my all time favorites.
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I watched this on the heels of watching the first film. Honestly, both films are great. I think this sequel gets so much hate because the first film is just that much better. Make no mistake about it, this movie is a shameless cash grab. But it does a great job of entertaining you with outstanding action and a few laughs. The film is about the odd couple of a beat cop and criminal teaming up yet again to take on some bad dudes. This film fails in that it focuses too much on the bad guys and not enough on the stars of the film. I'm guessing because Eddie Murphy was a huge star at that point and didn't have the time to hangout and shoot more scenes or whatever. And because of that, the film is slightly cheapen. But still worth watching if you enjoy action flicks. Some of the action in this film is jaw dropping but cheapened by overexposing the villains without developing them with dialogue and etc. But whatever, it is a great grind house film posing as a late 80s blockbuster.
At first, the sax and steel drum score was a welcome sound. But "Another 48 Hrs." has unnecessary written all over it. You can tell Eddie Murphy is enjoying greater star power here, but his relationship with Nick Nolte is disjointed. And when you factor in the retread (more bickering, another bar scene) and anemic bad guys, this just doesn't have any of the original's spark. What really surprised me is how bad the action scenes are. I mean, they are atrocious. It's got the comical reactions to gunshots that are characteristic of a loud and excessive - but ultimately really dull - action movie.5/10
Another 48 Hrs. (1990)** (out of 4)Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) has been trying to catch a criminal known as The Iceman for over four years when he's involved in a shooting that might cost him his badge. The only bit of evidence he's able to get is a picture of Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) and it becomes clear that he has a hit out on him. Jack and Reggie hit the streets one more time to try and find out who The Iceman is.ANOTHER 48 HRS. is a sequel that everyone wanted but it was released to horrid reviews and lukewarm box office receipts to say the least. There's no question that this here is one of the worst sequels to a great movie that has ever been made. Revisiting this film so many years later it's not nearly as bad as I remembered but at the same time you can't help but scratch your head and wonder what went wrong. What's so shocking about this movie is that Walter Hill returned as director and you've got Nolte and Murphy back as well. Even more shocking is that the entire film is pretty much a carbon copy of the original. This one here features graphic violence. It contains dirty humor. This one tries to work as a crime drama. You've got everything here that made the original successful but all of it falls flat on its face here. It's really too bad because Murphy and Nolte certainly have the chemistry for a series of films but the screenplay really lets them down. Instead of doing anything new we once again get Murphy singing Roxanne. Really? We have the two of them chasing the criminal's girlfriends again. We've got them fighting in a redneck bar again. There's an action scene dealing with a bus. Everything that we saw in the first picture is here again. It's amazing to see how much of the first film is copied here yet none of it works this time around. The movie is loud and obnoxious but it's just downright hollow without much going for it. The action scenes look great but there's just no tension or style to them. There are some funny bits but certainly not enough to keep the film more entertaining. ANOTHER 48 HRS. isn't a horrible movie but it's certainly lacking everything that made the original so great.
San Francisco police detective Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) has been tracking mysterious drug-lord Iceman. Iceman henchman Tyrone Burroughs is hiring a hit-man to kill Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy). Jack kills the hit-man but Tyrone escapes. Internal affairs Blake Wilson investigates and Jack is suspended facing possible charges. Reggie is getting out of prison after his 5 years. He demands to get his money from Jack but Jack refuses unless Reggie helps him. Tyrone hires Ganz and the violent biker gang to kill Reggie. Ganz is looking to avenge his brother and kill Jack. After they are both attacked, they are forced together once again.Director Walter Hill returns with Nolte and Murphy. It is wall to wall violence. It's explosions, gun battles, crashes and kills. However, the comedy isn't there any more and the vile language has been tone down quite a lot. I still like the guys but they don't have the same chemistry. It's missing the raw energy and Murphy's humor in the original.
