When an oil rig in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia proves unproductive, an aircraft crew are sent to shut the operation down and fly them out. On the flight out over the desert on the way to Beijing, Capt. Frank Towns and co-pilot A.J. are unable to keep their cargo plane, a C-119 Flying Boxcar, in the air when a violent sandstorm strikes. Crash-landing in a remote uncharted part of the desert, the two pilots and their passengers -- a crew of oil workers and a drifter -- must work together to survive by rebuilding the aircraft. Soon, low supplies and a band of merciless smugglers add even greater urgency to their task.

This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
I read a previous post that really had nothing good to say about anything regarding this movie. That's cool but I don't share that sentiment. I loved the movie I thought it was great. I enjoyed everything about it. Its a light, funny and enjoyable movie, with a slightly inspirational vibe to it. Its not heavy or too dramatic in any way, just an easy fun to watch movie. I liked all the characters and the way they played their parts, no complaints from me. Each movie is different so I rank them for what they are, I think its a solid 7 out of ten. There are some great songs throughout the movie as well which I really enjoyed. All round a nice easy to watch movie.
Then again, I've never seen the original, so there's always going to be people out there who claim that the Dennis Quaid version doesn't compare. Maybe they're right, but, seeing as I never saw it, I can only say that this modern version is a pretty fun action/adventure romp. It's about a plane that crashes in the desert and there's no discernible help coming for them. Therefore they're left with the choices of just sitting there awaiting death, or rebuilding their stricken aircraft from scratch and flying out of there. Guess what they choose the latter. However, it's not an easy task. Along with the natural lack of food and water, they have to contend with the elements, not to mention a tribe of gun-crazy nomads waiting to pick them off. There's a cast of about ten (including Dennis Quaid and Miranda Otto), so don't expect every one of them to be really fully-fleshed. A fair percentage are only there to find themselves lost in the desert or on the wrong end of a nomad's bullet. But, this isn't about character. Basically, the crew of 'stereotypes' are only there to fill a purpose, but so what – it's still fun! It's slightly longer than your average film (about an hour and forty minutes), but it never seems to drag. They crash pretty quickly and one disaster after the next moves the story along at a good pace.Okay, so when the history books are written about great action/adventure films, the remake of 'Flight of the Phoenix' will probably never be mentioned. However, that doesn't mean it's not a fun little ride if you're in the mood. Give it a go. If you find it on telly, or streaming for free on an online site its value is even greater.
"Flight of the Phoenix" is a 1964 novel, based on an incredible true story of survivors of a plane crash in the middle of the desert. If there was any way to do the book justice when attempting to make a movie out of it, it was in 1965 and starred James Stewart and Richard Attenborough. The film was a flop, yet has gone on to receive a large cult following.I like the overall look of the new film, but sadly this remake doesn't deliver anything decent enough via. acting or the tension that made the original so well loved. Dennis Quaid and Giovanni Ribisi are decent choices, but both are just a stone throw away from descending into awfulness themselves . Final Verdict: Do your self a favour and avoid, but I do recommend seeking out the original. 5/10.
This review is based solely on the 2004 movie. I have never seen the original so there will be no comparison. I picked this film to watch largely for the cast - in particular Dennis Quaid and Hugh Laurie - and had no idea until after I watched the movie that it was a remake. While this is certainly not an Oscar contender, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's a decent movie with solid performances by the cast. No, there's nothing original about this film, but then again, when was the last time anyone made a truly original movie? My suggestion: if you've never seen the original, watch this one first - since it is apparently the lesser movie. If you have seen the original, then watch this movie for its own merits and try not to do a comparison with the original film.
