Really Surprised!
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Why is this movie so popular? Is it the soundtrack? The memorable lines? Clancy Brown? Maybe it's because I didn't watch it as a kid (not that the movie is appropriate for children anyway).Because this movie is pretty bad. First of all, it's extremely boring...if you're already tired when you watch it, you're going to struggle. The whole movie feels like a strange dream, so maybe it doesn't matter if you fall asleep. You can just dream the restThe fight scenes are nothing special. Stiff, slow...I've seen better fight scenes in a day care center. And this is from the 80s. There's no excuse, especially when you watch Douglas Fairbanks or Errol Flynn in much older movies. The sex scene is totally unnecessary. Did it add anything at all to the movie? Would Casablanca be better if we saw Bergman and Bogart naked? Producer: "But...if they keep their clothes on, the peasants...uh, moviegoers won't understand that the main characters love each other!"When people talk about Highlander, it seems like they're more interested in "The Kurgan" than Connor McLeod, which is never a good sign. People laugh when old ladies are murdered, or when he says bad words in a Church etc. Maybe it's because the Heylenderr himself is uninteresting. Maybe people are insane. Evil isn't supposed to be fun...There's no real moral in the story either. It's a story about a bunch of idiots who chop each other's heads off for a New Agey price. Anyone can be the winner, no matter how rotten he is. It's almost like the impersonal "force" in Star Wars (even though those movies have redeeming qualities). It doesn't care whether you're good or evil.I'm probably going to get my head cut off for saying this, but Queen is one of the most overrated and overexposed bands in the world (some of their songs are decent). Rock music is bad enough on its own, but when you mix it with a bad fantasy movie, the result is hilarious...and not intentionally, like in Flash Gordon. Not recommended.(According to IMDB's trivia section, Sean Connery recorded the opening lines in a bathroom. How fitting...)
Movie Review: "Highlander" (1986)Some amazing sword-fights are visually received here, when leading actor Christopher Lambert, younger than 30 years while principal photography conceived in Summer of 1985, as century-striving character of Connor MacLeod trained with elegance, charms and wits by Sean Connery as show-stealing support Ramirez in great costumes by three-times Acadamy-Award-winning designer James Acheson in favor of director Russell Mulcahy, who does his directorial best in keeping together an originally-received script with suspense, emotional heart-break and state of the art 1980s visual effects works to finish in an epic confrontation between nemesis character Kurgan, performed with no-remorse with terrifying action beats ingnited by actor Clancy Brown and MacLeod, who owns all audience's sympathies-shares, before being released to a full circle picture of cinematic satisfactions, which actually needed no sequels.Copyright 2018 Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC
So I do not really know why this is a cult movie. The cinematography is pretty good and the music is fun me and the actors do what they can but on the whole the movie is boring and a 08/15 "immortality is a curse" story is nothing special unfortunately. However, I was always interested in finding out how Highlander could become such a huge franchise, even though there is nothing special in it and none of the films is really good. I've seen the long version or the Director's Cut after what I've heard the better version of the movie, with the added instruction sinews and passages in World War II. So I can only say if that was the better version I'm not interested in the rest of the franchise. I mean, I only saw the first movie but both the fans and the haters say that the first movie is the best and if what I've seen is the best thing Highlander has to offer then I'm worried. I have recognized many scenes from parodies of other films, South Park or the Simpsons and I am glad that I finally came to see a movie that has meant so many people something and has drawn some circles but unfortunately no circles in which I want to be. The love story is uninteresting the dear aspect was too much for me, the fights are not so exciting and the film was not sufficiently brutal for my taste. The whole movie also did not look so nice visually all the sets and props were so unaesthetic that it was really hard for me to get involved. The ideas of an immortal who hunts you all over the world is awesome, that's why I love Terminator, but this villain sucks so hard. He is not scary at all and if he was not so annoying Kurgan/Victor Kruger would be worthy of forgetting. But I'd like to call the review a bit positive. I can only say the actors are great, maybe it's because of this weird combination but they all really do their best and even those who do not make it right, like a lid on a glass, in this scenario to fit in that I could imagine no other actor in this role. I'm curious if there really will be a remake of it and I would even work on it because I have some ideas on how to expand this concept I would not mind a complete reboot with Black people and Chinese. But I think there can only be one.
What I really applaud about Highlander is that amongst all of the cheesy sword-fighting and flashy pyrotechnics, it didn't take itself too seriously and I guess that's what gave this film its wacky charm.I was also mighty impressed with the obvious care that was taken with the scenes that were shot in the beautiful countryside and along the coastal mountain regions of grand, old Scotland. The one and only actor who impressed me in Highlander was Clancy Brown who played (with great relish and finesse) the viciously nasty and savagely vengeful Kurgan. Yep. I certainly got my money's worth when Brown's character showed up on screen. (Ha! What a hoot he was!)All-in-all - This pre-CGI/Fantasy/Action picture from 1986 was fairly satisfying when it came to the realm of entertainment. And, I honestly thought that director Russell Mulcahy clearly showed a lot of flair and style in his overall execution of Highlander's production.*Trivia note* - Believe it, or not - There have now been 5 Highlander movies, 2 television series, an animated series, an animated movie, an animated flash-movie series, 10 original novels,19 comic book issues, and various licensed merchandise.
