Forest for the Trees
Award-winning war photographer Rita Leistner goes back to her roots as a tree planter in the wilderness of British Columbia, offering an inside take on the grueling, sometimes fun and always life-changing experience of restoring Canada’s forests. Leistner, who has photographed some of the world’s most dangerous places, credits the challenge of tree-planting for her physical and mental endurance. In Forest for the Trees, her first feature film, she revisits her past to share the lessons she learned. The film introduces us to everyday life on the “cut-block” and the brave souls who fight through rough terrains and work endless hours to bring our forests to life. The rugged BC landscape comes to life magically in Leistner’s photography, while the quirky characters and nuggets of wisdom shared around the campfire tell a sincere story of community.

Old photographic plates were found from Louejärvi village in Rovaniemi. Young photographer Hilja Paloniemi was given the job to help to clean the photographic plates. It was found out that the old photos were taken by Matti Körkkö in the early 1900s, including pictures of legendary Nätti-Jussi.

Seasick
Mal di mare is a gasp of air, a shout sung in waves moving through a body nauseated by the confrontation with the violence of the ever swirling world. This improvised singing tries to break the invisible glass that separates the gaze and the realities of those who can observe from afar and those who are observed, but who are mostly prevented from returning such gaze. Who/what’s missing in the room? The film was shot during the 2019 Venice Biennale and built around a performing action carried out by the filmmaker himself in the exhibition space.

From 2010 – 2020, the British government implemented a series of changes to the UK benefit system as part of their austerity (cost cutting) agenda. In 2016 the UK was investigated by the UN who found that “grave or systematic violations” of the rights of disabled people were taking place in the UK. These violations were closely associated with changes to the benefits system.
Sous le Silence et la Terre
A participant in the Soirée de la relève in 2017, Gisela Restrepo returns to the RIDM with her first feature film, a work as political as it is personal. The filmmaker, named after her aunt who was reported missing in the 80s, revisits a family wound that never had the chance to heal. She makes the journey to Colombia, her parents’ homeland, searching for the remains of her aunt who fought in the civil war and whose story is shrouded in mystery. The journey sheds light on an emblematic woman, whom Gisela never had the chance to meet; meanwhile, the film shatters the silence that was forced on her family and on all those denied the possibility of burying their dead.

Nude at Heart
A background study of a dying amusement culture, filmed in slovenly dressing rooms in front of badly polished make-up mirrors. – That’s how far editor Mary Stephen follows director Yoichiro Okutani’s montage interpretation of his own footage about the Japanese strippers called Odoriko. But Stephen’s editor’s cut begins fully dressed: a tastefully lit stage overture in costume, starting from which she rearranges or rather sheds the material, reintegrating image and sound sequences originally discarded by Okutani, for example the titular statement of an Odoriko explaining her choice of profession: “It was about being nude at heart.”
