Labour/Leisure
Labour/Leisure
The Okanagan Valley in the southern interior of British Columbia is marketed as a destination of leisure, recreation, retirement and wealth. Behind this facade is a largely invisible agricultural labour force, comprised of temporary migrant workers from the Global South. These workers are placed in a system that is inherently precarious and potentially exploitative, wherein their legal status is tied directly to their employer, with no path to permanent citizenship. While the workers pay into Canadian health care and pension plans, they do not benefit from these social goods as temporary citizens. This film aims to make this labour visible, while contemplating the prescribed aesthetics imposed on the landscape within the region. Formally, the film resides at the intersection of photography and the moving image, while embracing the generative structural limitations of early cinema.

Inland
Inland
"Politics for Austria," "Fairness," "We provide security"-election slogans that promise a return to bygone morals, adorn the city of Vienna before the Austrian national parliamentary elections in 2017. The mistrust with regard to supposed political elites, coupled with promises made by the right wing populist parties, polarize Austrian society. INLAND offers intimate insight into the lives of its protagonists and thereby draws a genre picture of their fears and hopes in complex times.

The Village Resists
The Village Resists
What happens when your land is being claimed as event zone for the two biggest sport events of the planet? A question that applies to the multi-ethnic urban Indigenous community of Aldeia Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as they face increased pressure ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Indigenous group lives right next to the sport stadium that stages the finals of both sport events. They wish to maintain their land as an Indigenous meeting place, like it has been since the early 20th century, but that does not correspond with the plans of the Brazilian authorities and the corporations coming with the sport events. From within the Indigenous settlement, the film explores how the arrival of the sport events is being experienced, how the pressure rises and how the community resists.

Mailo is my village, where I was born in 1975. I'm Christian, my father is Muslim. Today, I no longer recognize my village, which is divided by religious tensions, with a tarred road as a dividing line: Muslims on one side, Christians on the other. One night in 2009, I received a call from a cousin: "Bawa, get up and pray, your village is in danger of exploding!" The two "camps" were about to clash. So, to get people talking about living together, I returned to the village with a project: to build my house on the Muslim side.

A Tree Is Like A Man
A Tree Is Like A Man
A tree is like a man is an attempt to touch the otherworld through its edges. Shot on 16 mm in the Colombian Amazon, the film serves as personal witness to shaman Don William's lifetime relationship to Ayahuasca and other plant medicines that are native to the jungle. With the rainforest a rich labyrinthine background, this portrait is at once intimate and spare, opening up to alternate realities as dense as the jungle itself, with kaleidoscopic multiplicities in both the natural and the spiritual realms.

Over the course of a ten-year postal correspondence, a pair of movie-going pen-pals share their thoughts on some of 90s cinema’s key traits: the rise of video, the need for speed, and of course the cliff-edge sense of global dread. But do decades have ‘key traits’ at the time? Or do we assign them these characteristics retroactively, trying to make sense of things in hindsight? Only Leonard Nimoy knows for sure.
