Solaris Mon Amour
Solaris Mon Amour
An extraordinary found footage documentary inspired by Stanisław Lem’s “Solaris”. A trance-like, personal story about loss, mourning & memory. The film consists of excerpts from 70 films produced by the Educational Film Studio in Lodz in the 1960s and the first radio adaptations of "Solaris". Lem begins writing “Solaris” the same year that Resnais' “Hiroshima Mon Amour” is released – says Kuba Mikurda – Like Resnais' film, I find “Solaris” a fascinating study of post-traumatic memory – repressed memories that pave their way into consciousness and demand to be expressed.

(Im)possible to Stay
Today, liberated Kherson experiences constant shelling from Russian troops, making it perilous to open the theater's doors and welcome people inside. The theater stands empty, or so it appears. However, the theater troupe is rehearsing a play in Kyiv. They no longer need scripted roles; instead, they portray themselves in a documentary-style show, recounting their own story of how the people of Kherson resisted the Russian occupation and how they were leaving the Russian occupation because of their pro-Ukrainian stance. For those who remain in Kherson, most of their time is spent in the theater's basement, which once served as a refuge for townspeople during the early days of the full-scale invasion. It has now become the heart of the Kulish theater. Has this war separated people not only physically?

A Picture to Remember
A Picture to Remember
An essay-style account of the war from the perspective of three generations of women - those of the director, her mother, and that of her grandmother. Originally from Donetsk - an industrial city in eastern Ukraine - the family was uprooted in 2014 when the Russian war against Ukraine first commenced. By 2022, the same enemy once again began knocking on the door of their new home -which was now in Kyiv- and once again destroyed everything that the family had worked so hard to rebuild. Thrown into the limbo of exile, the director (she is also the narrator of the film) dives into a kaleidoscope of memories and chronicles both her personal and collective familial search for something to hold on to amid these turbulent times.

Chutzpah – Something About Modesty and Shame
Chutzpah – Something About Modesty and Shame
In the midst of a personal and work crisis, I begin to film everything obsessively: my parents, grandparents, children, friends and lovers, but also myself and psychotherapy. Some footage is consensual, some is “stolen.” This way my personal-intimate becomes narrative: the recent separation, the pain of my children’s being apart, my parents’ separation, my inadequacy as a mother. But in this autobiographical process of “coming out” I inevitably clash with the privacy of those close to me. The result is a kind of intimate diary that, in becoming public, is perhaps shameless and obscene. But where are the boundaries between what should remain private, offstage, and what can be made public and shared?

Precious. Rare. For Sale.
Precious. Rare. For Sale.
Precious. Rare. For Sale. takes a broad sweep at the presentation of nature in Vietnamese moving images from the 1990s. From being an abode for majestic and magical beasts, to serving as a backdrop for war heroics and social realist tragedies, representations of nature have been shaped by Vietnam’s changing socio-political contexts. Reflecting on how filmmakers have portrayed the environment, Bùi questions the ethics of exploiting nature for the camera. While early ethnographic films shot by the French depicted the Vietnamese jungle as an untouched, primitive landscape, today’s images of razed forests and neatly-partitioned land plots reveal how nature has become a commodity for a rising middle-class. Captured on screen by property developers and thrill-seeking vloggers alike, nature’s images shapeshift constantly, feeding into an endless loop of mediated consumption.
