The Colegio de Arquitectos de Catalunya commissioned Pere Portabella to make this film for the Joan Miró retrospective exhibit in 1969. There were heated discussions on whether it would be prudent to screen the film during the exhibit. Portabella took the following stance: "either both films are screened or they don't screen any" and, finally, both Miro l'Altre and Aidez l'Espagne were shown. The film was made by combining newsreels and film material from the Spanish Civil War with prints by Miró from the series "Barcelona" (1939-1944). The film ends with the painter's "pochoir" known as Aidez l'Espagne.

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

One of the problems of having a film with a single protagonist is having him or her communicate with the audience . You can achieve this via voice over that quickly outstays its welcome , or possibly you could someone writing in a diary but who wants to watch film with the lead character constantly put entries in to a journal ? It's easy in literature when you can spend page after page having exposition and thought process in prose . It's near impossible to translate this to screen which explains why there has never been a satisfactory adaptation of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND Greek film maker Thanos short film REMNANT suffers from this . Looking on the bright side if a film is Greek and no one speaks then it's very easy to market for an international audience , after all silence is an universal language but it can also make for an uninvolving story . That said the running length is appropriate for this type of short and the end scene is far more downbeat than I would have expected
