Highly Overrated But Still Good
Good concept, poorly executed.
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
In a mental institution a doctor decides to treat one of his patients by showing him a movie the patient made years ago. It's a horror movie were allegedly people were really killed by the director who's now the patient. He obsesses over this movie. When he sees it, he starts hurting himself. When the doctor goes in the room he sees lots of blood and then is attacked. Later everyone has vanished in the facility but there is blood everywhere. Some years later this very movie is about to be shown in some small theater. We meet the kids who work there. Some of them and their friends decide to watch the movie. It's allegedly a cult movie but only two more people attend to see it--a biker and his girl. A cop and a surviving doctor from the facility also show up, expecting the killer to make an appearance. The movie which was made ages ago actually takes place in the 60s yet is black and white. It shows three hippies on a road trip when they get a flat tire. The driver goes wondering around looking for help and ends up in the house of the killer. But something strange happens. When one of the theater kids goes to the a storage room, he's attacked by the killer...and it's shown on screen. The audience doesn't know any better. Then another kids from the audience goes to the restroom and is similarly killed and it's also shown on screen. Eventually the remaining audience realizes that the killer somehow ended up in the theater and is going after them. They confront him, escape, some are killed. They notice that the movie has something to do with everything so they try to stop the projection. They also realize that the killer preys on their fears and figure the solution is to pray and not be afraid. When the hero girl is attacked she ends up in limbo where all the other victims are--dead yet alive.Midnight movie has a lame setting, a dull cast, an unconvincing killer with a weapon that couldn't possibly do what it shows to do. Supernatural horror is usually unsatisfying, even more so when no explanation is offered. How come the movie here has such a magical power to teleport the killer? We never find out. The killer is some tall skinny guy with a limp who wears a partial skull mask. His weapon a cone-shaped corkscrew thing that when inserted in a chest yank's out the victim's heart somehow. Despite that, many killings aren't explicit but focus on the victim's face instead. At least Rebekah Brandes is lovely and the biker guy is entertaining.Midnight movie had potential had it had a more charismatic villain, a better cast, a variety of setting instead of some movie theater, and if it had been more violent.
A midnight showing of an early 1970s horror movie turns to chaos when the Killer from the movie comes out of the film to attack those in the theater. The 70s film sure does not look like a film from the 70s -- way too clean, for example. Adding a VW bus does not make it an old movie. (I suppose I could dismiss this as a joke.) I appreciated seeing Brea Grant (playing Rachael), a friend of Killer Reviews. She may not be a major character, but still nice to see her in horror films just the same. Rebekah Brandes (playing Bridget), I am not familiar with -- but she could make a fortune as a Taylor Swift lookalike.Horror Society's Bryan Schuessler wrote that the film was "one of the best slasher films that I have seen in awhile" and a "smashing success". Fangoria's Michael Gingold gave it three out of four skulls and says the film "cleverly juxtaposes the reel and real terrors, and occasionally subverts expectations." My praise may not be as thick as theirs, but I have to admit that I did not want to see this movie, but ended up finding it pretty decent.Low budget? Yes. Greatest movie ever? Hardly. Better than the average independent film? If you like slashers, certainly.
Sure, it's B-Grade, the killer's costume is awful and the acting isn't particularly good. But why do we need any of that in a slasher? Since the days of Scream the slasher has been my favorite sub-genre, and finding fresh new entries can be hard. That's why I was delighted to discover Midnight Movie. The film takes it's time establishing characters and showing off it's creepy story. Speaking of which is quite interesting. When things do pick up, they never stop coming. The gore is delightfully over-the top and the slightly stupid characters make for speedy, fun deaths. Unlike many others, I had no irks with the killer's weapon and thought the setting was brilliant. However, MM is not for the feint of heart. Beforementioned gore and a helping of scary atmosphere and set pieces make things rather horrifying for the typical slasher fan. So proceed with caution, oh weak stomached viewers. All in all, MM is fresh, inventive and delightfully insane. Everything you could ask for in a slasher.
Midnight Movie's got everything: a madhouse, blood, guts, gore and a weapon toting crazy to match. The villain of a movie entraps and menaces a group of teens with a corkscrew blade he drills deep into the guts and hearts of his victims. The slasher shots kept making me think of SAW. I wanted so badly to look away but the film kept me wide-eyed and jumping in my seat all through. The plot line's original, the filming creative and the graphics mad crazy. It's got a creepy, convincing villain and a gratifying ending. You may not have seen the original but the killer cut is amazing. Definitely worth watching. =) I can't wait to see it again.
